Native to Mexico, Pachyphytum Oviferum or commonly referred to as moonstones, is a succulent that can be a captivating addition to your plant's collection. Boasting silvery, chubby leaves, this plant has unique and attractive aesthetics and can appear strikingly beautiful whether you plant them in your garden or containers.
Like other succulents, Pachyphytum Oviferum can be a hassle-free plant if you provide them with right growing conditions. So, if you are thinking to add these incredible succulents in your home, make sure to give them the right amount of moisture, enough light, and the right soil. Here is a guide for taking proper care of moonstones.
How to Care for Moonstone Pachyphytum Oviferum Outdoors?
To plant your Pachyphytum Oviferum, choose a sunny spot in your garden that gets full sun all year-round. However, if your area experience intensely hot summers, pick a spot that receives dappled shade during afternoons in summers.
Mix equal parts of compost and sand or pumice in the area to a depth of 10-12 inches where you will be planting Pachyphytum Oviferum. Using this mix will protect the roots of your succulents from damage since water will not stand in such a soil.
After planting your moonstone, water your succulent when the topsoil feels dry. Keep in mind that overwatering will lead your plant’s root to rot. Besides, make sure to protect your Pachyphytum Oviferum from cold weather; these delicate succulents cannot tolerate temperature below 20 °F.
Note that temperatures below 20 °F will kill the plant. Although Pachyphytum Oviferum can tolerate intense sunlight in the morning, you have to make sure to protect it from the afternoon sun. Cover your succulent with a sheet or light blanket in the times of frost.
Do not water your plant in a way that water droplets splash on its leaves; they are quite delicate and more prone to damage, especially when overwatered. Furthermore, your succulent will need more water in winters, since these plants actively grow in the cold season.
How to Care for Moonstone Pachyphytum Oviferum Indoor?
If you want to grow your Pachyphytum Oviferum in a container indoors, make sure to provide it with the right growing conditions. But before that, you will need to learn how to transfer it into a container. Firstly, place some gravels into the bottom of your plant pot and fill it with a potting mix, which is specifically made for succulents.
The container you will be planting your Pachyphytum Oviferum in does not have to be very deep; if your succulent is 2-inch tall, a 2.5-inch container is a good choice. As your plant grows, your plant pot can gradually switch to 8-12 inches in diameter, since moonstones can spread up to 12-inches wide. It is an ideal size container for Pachyphytum Oviferum since it will allow your striking succulent to spread as it grows. Once you are done setting the container, plant your Pachyphytum Oviferum’s stem as deeper as in the pot it came in.
After that, water your plant well and place a layer of black pebbles over the soil to make your plant look more attractive. Make sure to keep your plant in a sunny place where it gets enough sunlight.
Water the in-container Pachyphytum Oviferum only when you feel it soil dry to a depth of 4 inches. Avoid watering it when the soil still feels moist or else your fragile succulent will be damaged.
If you are wondering how to examine in case your succulent needs water, the best way is to examine your Pachyphytum Oviferum leaves. If they feel firm and appear plump, your succulent does not need water. On the contrary, if your plant’s leaves feel soft and look wrinkly, water them right away.

When is it Suitable to Move Pachyphytum Oviferum Indoors?
It is important to mention here that people who live in the USDA plant zones 9 and ten can keep Pachyphytum Oviferum outdoors for most of the year, but they should bring moonstones indoors in frosty season.
Nevertheless, people in other US zones can place their Pachyphytum Oviferum outside in a sunny spot summer. Conversely, if your location is likely to experience intense summer heat, then make sure to move your Pachyphytum Oviferum during afternoons.
Like other succulents, moonstones are prone to developing mealy bug. Therefore, if you notice yours has stopped growing, it is highly likely that your plant has become a home to pests. There're a few ways to get rid of mealy bugs that you can find here.
