It's time for Spring. Our April box featuring Sempervivum Ruby Heart, Cotyledon orbiculata var. flanaganii, Crassula Mesembryanthemoides, and Sedum Adolphii succulent.

 

1. SEMPERVIVUM RUBY HEART

Sempervivum Red Lion Ruby Heart Succulent
Sempervivum Ruby Heart is a perennial easy-to-grow succulent that is perfect in containers. It can live in very cold area therefore it is also a great plant for outdoor gardens.
Gritty soil, Sandy.

Full Sun or Partial shade.

Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch, then let drain completely. Reduce watering to a minimum during winter.

Feed with a controlled-release fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season.

Sempervivum Red Lion can easily be propagated by separating and replanting offsets in planting medium.

2. COTYLEDON ORBICULATA VAR. FLANAGANII

Cotyledon orbiculata var. flanaganii succulent

Cotyledon orbiculata var. flanaganii is an erect, succulent shrub up to 34 inches (75 cm) tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, powdery gray-green and up to 6 inches (15 cm) long.
The bell-shaped, orange to orange-red flowers are small, up to 1.2 inches (3 cm) long and droop from the top of up to 9 inches (22.5 cm) tall stalk during summer. It grows best in sandy-gritty soil. Good drainage is very important as it is prone to root rot.

It grows in sun or part shade but flowers best in full sun.

It is a very dry-tolerant plant. Water regularly in the growing season, but avoid water-logging and let dry between watering, they should dry out completely during the rest period.

3. CRASSULA MESEMBRYANTHEMOIDES

Crassula Mesembryanthemoides succulent
Crassula Mesembryanthemoides comes from South African. Its long, pointed green leaves are covered with soft bristle-like hairs, giving it a fuzzy, frosted appearance. The hairs protect the plant from getting burnt and drying out, hence this succulent can be grown under full sun or partial shade.

Full Sun or Partial Shade.

Mix 15-20% of sand through the soil.

Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch, then let drain completely. Avoid letting water sit for too long in the soil to prevent rot and fungal diseases.

Average summer temperatures from 65ºF/18ºC to 70ºF/21ºC are ideal. In winter, it can survive temperatures as low as 50ºF/10ºC.

Feed with a controlled-release fertilizer at the beginning of the growing season.

You can propagate Crassula Mesembryanthemoides by division, offsets or leaf cuttings. The easiest way is to propagate from a single leaf: put the leaf in a succulent or cacti mix, then cover until it sprouts.

4. SEDUM FIRE STORM SUCCULENT

Sedum Adolphii Fire Storm Golden Succulent

Sedum Adolphii, also known as Golden Sedum, is a tender succulent that grows up to 8 inches (20 cm) tall. It is a groundcover that forms rosettes of green-yellow leaves, up to 1.4 inches (3.5 cm) long.
Sedum Adolphii develops orange or red hue when it receives a great amount of sunlight. As the rosettes mature, they grow new leaves at the center and shed the older leaves on the soil. These old leaves can root and grow into new plants.
Sedum Adolphii produces small cream-colored flower heads in spring.
Clay Soil, Sandy Soil, Loamy Soil, Drought/Dry Soil.

Water deeply when soil is dry to the touch, then let drain completely.

Full Sun.
