  •   Tradescantia 'Sanna', also called Sanna Spiderwort, is a trailing variegated houseplant in the Commelinaceae family, bred from the Tradescantia genus native to Central and South America. It belongs to the same group as the wandering dude and white inch plant, grown for its trailing stems and green and white variegated foliage.

The leaves are lance-shaped, forest green with crisp white stripes running along the length of each blade. Stems trail and spread outward, and depending on how it is pruned, Sanna Spiderwort can grow as a wide spreader or be kept to a narrower, more upright form. The foliage has a slightly waxy surface, and the contrast between the deep green and white gives each stem a clean, two-tone pattern.

Tradescantia varieties in this group occasionally produce small three-petaled flowers, though Sanna Spiderwort is primarily grown for its foliage rather than its blooms. It filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the air, and the trailing stems work well in hanging baskets where the variegated leaves face outward along the full length of each stem.

Hang Sanna Spiderwort in a basket with a sturdy hook, or let it trail from a shelf or floor planter in a bohemian or architectural indoor setup. Move it outside for summer once nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F. Cats, dogs, and other pets should be kept away from it, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant should not be nibbled or eaten. Place it on a high shelf or in a spot away from small children and toddlers for the same reason.

  •   Tradescantia 'Sanna' grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct south-facing windows that scorch the leaves.

It needs watering every seven to ten days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between sessions.

Sanna Spiderwort does best in a well-draining potting mix, such as standard houseplant soil combined with perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heater drafts.

Sanna Spiderwort is a fast-growing trailing plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 12, tolerating lows only down to around 25°F to 30°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, Southern California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and along the Gulf Coast. It also thrives outdoors in parts of Oregon and coastal areas of the Pacific Northwest that remain frost-free through winter.
  • Q: Is Tradescantia 'Sanna' safe for cats and dogs?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat it. The sap also causes irritation on skin and paws, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: Tradescantia 'Sanna' most often develops yellow leaves from overwatering or sitting in soggy soil. Inconsistent light and exposure to cold drafts from AC or heaters can also cause discoloration.

Q: How do I propagate Sanna Spiderwort?
A: Cut a stem just below a node, remove the lower leaves, and place it in water or moist soil. Roots typically appear within one to two weeks.

Q: Which window direction works best for this plant?
A: Sanna Spiderwort grows well a few feet back from an east or west-facing window. South-facing windows scorch the leaves, so keep it out of direct midday sun.

Q: Does Sanna Spiderwort grow well under office lighting?
A: It can grow under bright LED office lighting, though growth will be slower and the white variegation may appear less defined than in natural indirect light.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Sanna Spiderwort wilts slightly and the stems lose their firmness when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
