Amethyst has thin, wiry, silvery-green leaves arranged in a compact rosette. The foliage develops white and purple tones, especially under bright light conditions. It remains small and airy in form, with branching stems that give it a distinctive open structure.
It produces small flowers during the growing season, though bloom timing and color vary with light and humidity levels. Amethyst flowers best when exposed to good air circulation and moderate humidity, and the plant often sends out multiple bloom spikes when conditions are favorable.
Amethyst works well mounted on driftwood, cork bark, or displayed in a terrarium where humidity stays elevated. Move it outside in summer to boost growth and color development. It handles balcony wind and rain without damage. You can leave it up to ten days without water. This plant is pet-friendly.
Tillandsia Tenuifolia Amethyst grows in direct sun to low-light conditions, with best color development in brighter spots.
Water it by soaking in room-temperature water for 20-30 minutes weekly, or mist it 2-3 times per week if soaking is not possible; shake off excess water at the base to prevent rot.
Amethyst needs no soil and grows without it; mount it on driftwood, cork, or wire frames, or place it in an open dish without covering the base with adhesive.
It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 85°F year-round and handles drafty spots without stress.
It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11 and tolerates temperatures no lower than 50°F. It grows outdoors in California, Texas, Florida, Arizona, Hawaii, and the warmest regions of the Southeast and Southwest.
