  •   Thelocactus Bicolor, also called Bicolor Cactus, is a rare collector cactus native to the Chihuahuan Desert regions of Texas and northern Mexico, where it grows in rocky, sun-baked limestone soils. A true glory of Texas cactus, it belongs to the Thelocactus genus within the Cactaceae family and grows well in drought conditions with minimal water.

The plant features a ribbed, globe-to-cylindrical green body densely armed with bicolored spines in shades of red, white, and yellow. It grows in an upright, clustering habit, producing offsets over time that make each specimen fuller as it matures. The compact form stays manageable indoors and suits sunny windowsills and rock gardens alike.

Thelocactus Bicolor produces vivid magenta-pink to purple funnel-shaped flowers at the crown, typically blooming in spring and summer when conditions align. A cool night temperature drop in late winter, around 50-55°F, triggers blooms, so placing it near a cool window gives it the seasonal cue it needs to flower.

Move it outside for summer in warm climates, but provide cover from rain to avoid rot. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It is pet friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, though its sharp spines mean placement on a high shelf away from small children is wise. Propagate it by carefully removing offsets from a mature clustering plant, allowing them to callous for a few days, then potting them in dry cactus mix.

  •   Thelocactus Bicolor Cactus needs direct, full sun for at least 6 hours daily and can scorch in intense south-facing windows without gradual acclimation.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter when the plant is dormant.

Thelocactus Bicolor does best in a fast-draining cactus mix blended with 30-50% perlite or coarse sand to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 50-95°F and should be brought indoors before nights drop below 40°F.

Thelocactus Bicolor is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a diluted cactus fertilizer applied once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 8-11, tolerating brief dips down to around 20°F in dry conditions. It grows outdoors year-round across Texas, Arizona, California, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. It can also overwinter successfully in sheltered spots in North Carolina, Arkansas, and parts of Tennessee and Virginia.
  • Q: How often should I water Thelocactus Bicolor Cactus?
A: During the growing season, check that the soil dries completely between waterings before applying water again. In winter, water once monthly or less as the plant enters dormancy.

Q: Will this cactus bloom indoors?
A: Thelocactus Bicolor Cactus flowers most reliably with a cool winter rest, ideally around 50-55°F at night, plus bright natural light and reduced watering through winter.

Q: Is Thelocactus Bicolor pet safe?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs. The sharp spines can cause physical injury, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach.

Q: How do I propagate offsets?
A: Thelocactus Bicolor produces pups at the base of mature plants. Remove them, let them callous for several days, then pot them in dry cactus mix.

Q: Can Bicolor Cactus grow under artificial light?
A: It can survive under strong office LEDs but reaches its full form and blooms most reliably with natural direct sunlight. Rotate it regularly under artificial light to encourage even, upright growth.

Q: What causes yellowing on this cactus?
A: Yellowing typically indicates overwatering, poor drainage, or insufficient light. Ensure the soil dries fully between waterings and the plant receives adequate direct sun daily.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
