    •   Sansevieria trifasciata 'Starlight', also called Snake Plant Starlight, is a cultivar of the widely grown snake plant native to West Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky habitats with sparse rainfall. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and has been cultivated as a low light air purifying indoor plant across the world for decades.

        The leaves grow upright in a tight rosette form, sword-shaped and stiff, reaching around 24 to 36 inches tall. 'Starlight' is distinguished by pale silvery-green to creamy white leaf faces, edged and streaked with darker green banding. The contrast between the lighter center and the darker margins runs the full length of each leaf.

        Mature specimens can occasionally produce a slender flower spike with small, tubular, white to pale greenish blooms that carry a light fragrance, though flowering indoors is infrequent. 'Starlight' is better known for its air purifying qualities - it filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins, and releases oxygen at night rather than during the day.

        Move it outside in summer on a patio or balcony, but place it under an overhang or cover, as the leaves need protection from direct rainfall. Keep 'Starlight' on a high shelf or out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children, as the plant should not be nibbled or eaten. It wilts slightly when dry, and you can leave it up to ten days without water between waterings.

    •   Snake Plant Starlight grows well in a wide range of light, from low light to bright indirect light, and holds up under standard office LEDs. Direct south-facing sun can scorch the leaf faces, so diffused light or a north or east window works best.

        Water it every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce watering to once a month.

        'Starlight' does best in a well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix, or a standard potting mix cut with perlite or coarse sand. Good drainage prevents root rot, which is the most common issue with overwatering.

        It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F indoors and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning vents or heaters blowing directly on the foliage. Keep it away from exterior doors and vents during winter months.

        'Starlight' is a slow to moderate grower that produces new leaves from the base as the plant matures. Feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer only.

        It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 12, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F briefly before cold damage sets in. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia. It can also spend the summer outdoors in cooler states and be brought back inside before temperatures drop in autumn.

    • Q: Is Snake Plant Starlight safe for pets and children?
      A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact. Place it on a high shelf, away from small children as well.

      Q: How do I know when it needs water?
      A: Snake Plant Starlight wilts slightly when it has been dry too long, and the soil will be completely dry several inches down. If the leaves look soft or slightly wrinkled, it is past due for a drink.

      Q: Can 'Starlight' really grow in an office with no windows?
      A: It handles low light and grows steadily under standard fluorescent or LED office lighting. Growth will be slower than in natural light, but the plant stays healthy.

      Q: How do I propagate it?
      A: 'Starlight' propagates through leaf cuttings or by dividing the pups that emerge at the base of the plant. Division is the fastest method and produces an established plant sooner than leaf cuttings.

      A: Yellow leaves are almost always caused by overwatering or soil that holds too much moisture. Let the soil dry out completely before the next watering and check that the pot has drainage holes.
