  •   Sansevieria Cylindrica, also called African Spear Plant, is a succulent perennial native to Angola and the dry, rocky regions of southern Africa. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and grows naturally in arid savanna environments where rainfall is infrequent and soils are poor.

The leaves are cylindrical and smooth, tapering to a sharp point at the tip, and grow in a fan-like arrangement from the base. Each leaf is gray-green with faint darker banding across the surface. Sansevieria Cylindrica can reach two to three feet tall indoors, and the stiff, upright leaves grow thick and dense over time.

Flowering indoors is uncommon, but when it does bloom, it produces a tall central spike with small, tubular, pale pink or white flowers that carry a light fragrance at night. It releases oxygen at night rather than during the day, which sets it apart from most other houseplants. Sansevieria Cylindrica also filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the air.

You can move it outside for summer once nighttime temperatures stay above 50°F, and it handles dry heated indoor air without issue. It grows well under office LED lighting and does not need a south-facing window. You can leave it up to ten days without water, so it continues growing during extended absences. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to the leaves, and placing it on a high shelf keeps it out of reach.

  •   Snake Plant Cylindrica - 4" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY grows well in bright indirect light but also manages in medium or low light, including office fluorescent and LED setups. Avoid direct south-facing sun exposure, as the leaves can scorch.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings. In winter, reduce to once every three to four weeks.

Sansevieria Cylindrica does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix combined with perlite to prevent moisture from sitting around the roots. A heavy pot helps anchor the deep root system.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and handles the dry, warm air common in centrally heated homes. Keep it away from cold drafts and air conditioning vents, as prolonged exposure below 50°F causes damage.

Sansevieria Cylindrica is a slow-growing plant that adds only a few inches per year under typical indoor conditions. Feed it with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once in spring and once in midsummer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F to 30°F for brief periods. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Hawaii. It also grows outdoors in parts of Oregon and coastal regions of the Gulf and Atlantic states that remain within those zones.
  • Q: How much light does Snake Plant Cylindrica - 4" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY need near a window?
A: A north or east-facing window works well. West-facing windows are fine with a sheer curtain. Keep it several feet back from an unfiltered south window, as prolonged direct sun turns the leaf tips brown and bleaches the banding.

Q: How do I know if I am overwatering?
A: Snake Plant Cylindrica - 4" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY will show soft, mushy leaf bases and yellowing near the soil line when the roots have been sitting in moisture too long. The cylindrical leaves lose their firmness before any other sign appears.

Q: Can Sansevieria Cylindrica handle being near a heating or AC vent?
A: Prolonged exposure to direct airflow from a heater or air conditioner dries out the leaf tips faster than normal. A few feet of distance from the vent is enough to prevent that.

Q: How tall does it grow in a 4-inch pot?
A: Sansevieria Cylindrica in a 4-inch nursery pot is typically a young plant, often around 6 to 12 inches tall. It will grow slowly over the years, eventually reaching 2 to 3 feet indoors once it matures and is moved to a larger container.

Q: Is African Spear Plant safe to have around cats and dogs?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap can also cause mild skin or paw irritation on contact, so handling with care is a good idea.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: African Spear Plant is most reliably propagated by dividing the offsets, called pups, that emerge at the base. Carefully separate a pup with roots attached and pot it into dry succulent mix, then wait a week before the first watering.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
