  •   Snake Plant Cylindrica, also called Cylindrical Snake Plant, is a succulent native to Angola in southern Africa, where it grows in dry, rocky terrain and open woodland. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and has been widely cultivated as a drought-tolerant indoor plant across the world.

The leaves grow in a fan-like arrangement, each one a stiff, smooth cylinder that tapers to a sharp point at the tip. They are gray-green with faint, horizontal banding in a slightly lighter shade running around the circumference. Mature leaves can reach two to three feet in length indoors, growing upright and close together from a central base.

Sansevieria Cylindrica rarely blooms indoors, but mature plants can push out a long, slender flower spike under the right conditions, typically a consistent drop in nighttime temperature. The flowers appear in small clusters along the spike, cream to pale pink in color, and carry a faint sweet scent in the evening. It also filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins and releases oxygen at night, which sets it apart from most other houseplants.

Place it near a window but out of direct sun, rotating the pot a quarter turn every few weeks so each side gets even light exposure. You can move it outside for summer, but cover it or bring it under an overhang during rain. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to it; the sap can irritate skin and paws, and the plant should not be ingested. It can stay unwatered for up to ten days without issue, and its air-purifying qualities make it a practical choice for offices, bedrooms, and any low-light indoor space.

  •   Snake Plant Cylindrica grows well under bright indirect light but also handles medium and low light, including office LED setups.

Water it every ten to fourteen days in the growing season, and once a month in winter, letting soil dry fully between waterings.

Sansevieria Cylindrica does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, ideally combined with perlite to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning vents or heating units nearby.

Sansevieria Cylindrica is a slow to moderate grower; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 through 12, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 30°F before frost causes damage. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, southern Texas, Arizona, and Louisiana. In cooler climates, it spends summer outdoors and moves inside before the first frost.
  • Q: Can Snake Plant Cylindrica survive while I'm away on a trip?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water and it will hold steady, as long as it was watered before you left and is not sitting in direct sun.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Snake Plant Cylindrica wilts slightly and the soil pulls away from the edges of the pot when it is ready for water. Soft, mushy leaves at the base point to overwatering rather than underwatering.

Q: Is Sansevieria Cylindrica safe to keep around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should not nibble or eat the plant. The sap can irritate skin and paws, and ingestion can cause stomach upset, so keep it on a high shelf or another spot out of reach.

Q: What window direction works best for this plant?
A: Sansevieria Cylindrica does well a few feet back from an east or north-facing window. South-facing windows can scorch the leaf tips if the plant sits directly in the glass's path during peak afternoon hours.

Q: Can Cylindrical Snake Plant be grown outdoors in summer?
A: Move it outside once overnight temperatures stay consistently above 50°F. Keep it in a sheltered spot with overhead cover, since repeated rain and waterlogged soil can lead to root rot.

Q: Does this plant actually clean indoor air?
A: Cylindrical Snake Plant filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins and releases oxygen at night rather than during the day.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
