  •   Snake Plant Black Gold Sansevieria (Sansevieria trifasciata 'Black Gold'), also called mother-in-law's tongue, is an upright succulent native to tropical West Africa. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and grows naturally in rocky, arid environments with poor soil and intense heat.

The leaves are long, sword-shaped, and grow in a stiff upright rosette, reaching up to three feet tall at maturity. Each leaf is deep green at the center with a broad golden-yellow margin running along both edges. The surface is smooth with faint horizontal banding, and the contrast between the dark green interior and the golden edge gives this sansevieria trifasciata black gold its name.

Confirmed flower information for this variety is limited, so it rarely blooms indoors under typical conditions. What it does consistently offer is nighttime oxygen release, and it actively filters indoor air including formaldehyde and other airborne toxins. Black Gold is a well-established low light houseplant and air purifying plant, and it holds up under office LED lighting without losing its leaf structure.

Place it near a kitchen where ambient moisture supports steady growth, or move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot. It needs cover from rain when outdoors, as standing water in the soil can cause root problems. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it tolerates the dry, heated air common in most indoor spaces. Keep Black Gold on a high shelf or in a room away from cats, dogs, and small children, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant should not be eaten by people or pets.

  •   Snake Plant Black Gold Sansevieria grows well in low to bright indirect light, including under standard office LEDs. Avoid south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaf edges.

It needs watering every ten to fourteen days, allowing the soil to dry out completely between sessions. Cut back to once a month in winter.

Black Gold does best in a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite to prevent moisture retention.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and handles the dry, heated air typical of most indoor environments.

Black Gold grows slowly, adding a few inches per year, and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, where outdoor temperatures stay above 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, and Louisiana. It also does well outdoors through the warmer months in Georgia, South Carolina, and coastal areas of Oregon and Washington. Rotate it periodically so all sides receive even light exposure.
  • Q: How much light does Snake Plant Black Gold Sansevieria need?
A: A north- or east-facing window works well. Keep it a few feet back from a south or west window, where direct afternoon sun can bleach and scorch the golden leaf margins.

Q: How do I know if I'm overwatering it?
A: Snake Plant Black Gold Sansevieria shows overwatering through soft, mushy leaf bases and soil that stays damp for more than two weeks. If the roots smell sour when you unpot it, the soil has been holding too much moisture for too long.

Q: Can Black Gold survive while I'm traveling?
A: The soil should be fully dry before you leave, and the plant should be in a stable room-temperature spot away from direct sun. Under those conditions, it holds up for about ten days without any attention.

Q: Is this plant safe around pets?
A: Black Gold should be kept out of reach of cats and dogs. The sap causes skin and paw irritation on contact, and the plant should not be chewed or eaten by pets or small children.

Q: How do I get even growth from Black Gold?
A: Rotate the pot a quarter turn every two to three weeks so each side of the rosette gets equal exposure to the light source.

Q: Can this plant go outside in summer?
A: Black Gold can move outdoors once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 60°F. Place it in a sheltered spot with bright indirect light, and make sure it has cover from rain to protect the soil from waterlogging.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
