    •   Silver Swirl Rex Begonia (Begonia rex 'Silver Swirl') is a painted leaf begonia bred for its dramatically patterned foliage, belonging to the Begoniaceae family. It originates from hybrid cultivation rooted in the species native to subtropical Asia, particularly northeastern India.

        The leaves are broad and asymmetrical, with a slightly puckered, almost quilted texture across the surface. Each leaf is covered in sweeping silver tones with darker green edges and deep burgundy-red undersides, the silver radiating outward from the center in loose, swirling bands. New leaves emerge with the same patterning already visible, and the overall habit is a low, spreading rosette of overlapping foliage.

        'Silver Swirl' occasionally produces small pale pink flowers on thin stems above the foliage, though blooming is infrequent indoors and the foliage remains the main draw through every season. It performs well as a terrarium plant, where the enclosed environment holds the high humidity it needs.

        Rotate the pot a quarter turn every week or two so each side of 'Silver Swirl' receives even light exposure. It can move outside for summer in a sheltered spot, but it needs cover from rain and should not sit in a location exposed to strong weather. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, and place it on a high shelf or another spot out of reach of pets and small children, as the sap can cause skin and paw irritation and the plant should not be nibbled or eaten by cats, dogs, or toddlers.

        'Silver Swirl' is a slow to moderate grower, reaching around 12 to 18 inches wide at maturity. Feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer.

        It is hardy in USDA zones 10 through 12, where frost does not occur and temperatures stay reliably above 55°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, and coastal Southern California. It can spend summers outdoors in zone 9 areas including central California and parts of Texas, Arizona, and Louisiana, but needs to come back inside before nighttime temperatures drop in autumn.
