Sempervivum 'Oddity', also called Hens And Chicks, is a frost-tolerant succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to mountainous regions across Europe and northern Africa. It forms tight rosettes of fleshy leaves that spread slowly outward, creating dense clusters over time.
The leaves are narrow, tubular, and tightly spiraled in the rosette, ranging from forest green to vivid red depending on light and temperature. 'Oddity' grows compact and dense, staying relatively contained compared to other Hens And Chicks varieties. The sculptural, columnar appearance of each leaf gives the entire plant a distinctive geometric quality.
In summer, it produces small flowers clustered atop tall spikes that emerge from the center of mature rosettes. Blooms are typically pink to red, appearing once the rosette has matured, after which that particular rosette slowly declines and makes room for offsets to expand the colony.
'Oddity' is a slow grower that requires minimal feeding. You can leave it up to ten days without water. It handles drafty spots and stays outdoors in autumn in most regions without protection. Move it outside in summer to enjoy full light intensity and compact growth. This plant is pet friendly. Propagate it easily by separating mature offsets from the parent rosette and planting them in gritty soil where they will root in 1 to 2 weeks.

Sempervivum 'Oddity' grows well in direct sun but adapts to low-light spots indoors, though leaf color develops most richly in bright, direct conditions.
Water it when the soil is completely dry; every 10-14 days during spring and summer, and once monthly in fall and winter.
'Oddity' does best in fast-draining gritty soil, such as a cactus mix amended with perlite or coarse sand.
It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 75°F but tolerates dry heated air from furnaces and radiators without issue.
'Oddity' is a slow-growing succulent that needs no regular feeding; apply a diluted, low-nitrogen fertilizer once in spring if desired.
It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 11, surviving temperatures down to minus 40°F in northern regions. It grows outdoors year-round in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and throughout the Rocky Mountain states. It also grows well in milder zones across the South and Southwest, from North Carolina and Tennessee through Texas, California, and the Pacific Northwest.

Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered
light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do
NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour
off any excess water after a few minutes.
The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot
area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended
periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
