  •   Sempervivum 'Hopewell' is a cold hardy succulent in the houseleek family, also called hens and chicks. It originates from the mountainous regions of Europe, where it naturally grows in rocky, well-draining conditions and tolerates harsh alpine climates.

'Hopewell' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with thick, fleshy leaves pointed at the tips. The leaves shift from green to burgundy-red hues, especially in full sun exposure. It develops a clustering growth habit over time, with small offsets surrounding the mother rosette to create expanding colonies. The compact structure suits rock gardens and balcony displays.

After several years of growth, 'Hopewell' produces tall flower spikes with star-shaped blooms during summer months. The plant needs rotating for even growth and tolerates balcony wind and rain well, though it requires shelter from excessive rainfall to prevent root rot.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. 'Hopewell' propagates easily through offsets, or "chicks," that develop around the mother rosette. Simply separate and replant the small rosettes once they develop their own roots. Move it outside in summer or keep it outdoors through autumn and into cold winters. This drought tolerant succulent is pet friendly and safe around cats and dogs.

  •   Sempervivum 'Hopewell' grows well in full sun to partial sun but avoids scorching in south-facing windows.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings every 7-14 days.

'Hopewell' does best in well-draining succulent soil mix with added perlite or coarse sand for optimal drainage.

It prefers temperatures from 20 to 80°F and withstands frost down to -20°F.

'Hopewell' is a slow-growing succulent requiring minimal fertilizer, needing only diluted succulent fertilizer once yearly in spring.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-9 and tolerates frost temperatures down to -20°F. It grows successfully across most US states including Alaska, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Washington, Oregon, and northern regions of California, Arizona, and Texas. It performs well in areas with cold winters and moderate summers.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum 'Hopewell' safe for pets?
A: It is completely non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs.

Q: How do I propagate this succulent?
A: Sempervivum 'Hopewell' propagates easily through offsets that grow around the mother rosette. Once the small rosettes develop their own roots, separate and replant them.

Q: Can 'Hopewell' survive extended time without watering?
A: It can tolerate dry conditions for extended periods due to water stored in its thick leaves and roots.

Q: What causes yellow leaves on this plant?
A: 'Hopewell' develops yellow leaves from overwatering or poor drainage. Reduce watering frequency and ensure soil drains quickly.

Q: What light window does 'Hopewell' prefer indoors?
A: Full sun indoors produces the deepest color saturation; avoid direct afternoon sun through south-facing glass, which can cause pale bleaching on the leaf surface.

Q: How cold hardy is this succulent?
A: 'Hopewell' survives temperatures down to -20°F and is hardy in USDA zones 3-9 across most of the continental US.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
