  •   Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Emerald Spring' is a cold hardy succulent from the Crassulaceae family, commonly known as a houseleek or hens and chicks succulent. Native to mountainous regions of central and southeastern Europe, it colonizes rocky slopes and alpine meadows where drainage is excellent and conditions are harsh. Emerald Spring survives in harsh conditions and is suited to growers at any skill level.

The plant forms tight, symmetrical green rosettes with softly hairy, fleshy leaves that give it a textured appearance. Foliage holds an emerald green color through most of the year, with leaf tips that flush red or bronze in strong sunlight. It spreads steadily by producing small offset rosettes, or "chicks," that radiate outward from the mother rosette to form a dense, carpet-like mat.

Like all sempervivums, Emerald Spring needs a pronounced night temperature drop to trigger blooming, so keeping it outdoors through autumn is the best way to set flower buds. It produces pollen and can be a source of allergens during bloom season.

Emerald Spring works well in rock gardens, alpine troughs, container displays, and balcony arrangements where it handles wind and rain with ease. It tolerates the dry heated air of indoor spaces in winter and can survive up to ten days without water. The plant is pet friendly and safe for cats and dogs. It grows outdoors year-round in USDA zones 4-9 without special protection.

  •   Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Emerald Spring' grows well in partial to full direct sun outdoors, though intense south-facing indoor windows may scorch the foliage.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings, roughly every two to three weeks.

Emerald Spring does best in a gritty, fast-draining mix such as cactus soil blended with perlite or coarse grit.

It tolerates a wide range from around 10°F up to 90°F and handles frost with impressive hardiness.

Emerald Spring is a moderately slow to medium grower and needs little to no fertilizer to stay healthy.

It is hardy in USDA zones 4-9. It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and much of California and Texas. It also grows outdoors in Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Arkansas, New Mexico, Nevada, and Arizona.
  • Q: Is Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Emerald Spring' safe for pets?
A: It is not toxic to cats or dogs and is safe for pet-owning households.

Q: What happens if I overwater it?
A: Sempervivum globiferum ssp. hirtum 'Emerald Spring' rots when soil stays wet for extended periods. In winter especially, the soil must dry fully between waterings to prevent root and rosette decay.

Q: How much sun does Emerald Spring need indoors?
A: A very bright south or west-facing window works best. Watch for leaf scorching, which appears as tan or bleached patches on foliage exposed to intense direct light through unfiltered glass.

    Q: Can I propagate it?
A: Emerald Spring spreads naturally by producing small offset rosettes around the base of the mother plant. Simply detach a rooted offset and replant it in well-draining soil.

Q: Does Emerald Spring need winter protection outdoors?
A: It handles frost well and stays outdoors year-round without cover; however, in wet climates, shielding it from prolonged heavy winter rain prevents rot.

Q: How fast does it grow?
A: Emerald Spring spreads gradually through clustering and offsets rather than upright growth, filling a space over time rather than quickly.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
