  •   Rhoeo Tricolor, also called Oyster Plant, is a tropical perennial in the Tradescantia genus native to southern Mexico and Central America. It grows naturally in sheltered spots with filtered light and well-drained soil, and it purifies indoor air in homes and offices.

The plant forms a compact upright rosette of lance-shaped leaves in a clumping growth habit. The upper leaf surface shows green streaked with cream and soft pink, while the underside shows deep purple, creating a tricolor contrast that remains bold and consistent year-round. It grows as a drought-tolerant succulent and stays low and manageable on shelves and windowsills.

Small white flowers emerge cradled inside boat-shaped purple bracts at the leaf base, appearing sporadically throughout the year and lending the plant its "Oyster Plant" common name. The blooms are modest in size and fragrance, but their structure adds detail to the foliage. It also filters indoor air by removing formaldehyde and other common toxins.

Rhoeo Tricolor adapts well to kitchens and living spaces where ambient moisture from cooking provides humidity, and it performs well under office LED lighting. Move it outside in summer to a bright, sheltered spot, though it needs cover from heavy rain and should come back indoors before temperatures cool. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach of cats, dogs, and small children. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Rhoeo Tricolor Succulent grows in medium light and partial sun, handling low light indoors without decline.

Water it every 7–10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

Rhoeo Tricolor grows well in a potting soil blend mixed with perlite or cactus mix for drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 60–85°F and should be protected from frost below 50°F.

Rhoeo Tricolor is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25–30°F only briefly before needing protection. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. Coastal Nevada, parts of Oregon's coast, and sheltered microclimates in New Mexico and Arkansas within these zones also support outdoor growth with minimal cold-weather care.
  • Q: How often should I water Rhoeo Tricolor Succulent?
A: Water every 7–10 days when the top inch of soil feels dry. Underwatering causes less damage than overwatering with this drought-tolerant species.

Q: Is it safe to keep around cats and dogs?
A: Rhoeo Tricolor Succulent's sap causes skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf away from pets and small children.

Q: Can Rhoeo Tricolor tolerate low light?
A: Yes, it adapts well to low light and office LED lighting without losing leaf color or growth.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Rhoeo Tricolor propagates easily by separating offsets from the base and potting them in fresh, well-draining soil.

Q: What causes yellow leaves on Oyster Plant?
A: Yellow leaves usually result from overwatering or poor drainage. Move it away from direct airflow from vents and allow the soil to dry fully between waterings.

Q: Can I grow this plant outdoors?
A: Oyster Plant grows outdoors in summer in bright, sheltered spots with partial sun, but bring it inside before fall temperatures drop below 50°F.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
