  •   Rebutia Sanguinea, also called Blood Cactus, is a drought tolerant cactus native to the rocky highlands of Bolivia and Argentina. It belongs to the Rebutia genus in the family Cactaceae and grows well in thin soils and intense sun across its native range.

The plant forms tight clusters of small globe-shaped stems covered in neat spiraling rows of white or pale spines against a green body. Its compact, clumping growth habit stays tidy and sculptural, building into a dense, upright mound as the cluster matures. Individual stems typically reach 2–3 inches tall, though the clump spreads wider over time, making it a desktop cactus plant perfect for windowsills and shelves.

Rebutia Sanguinea produces a spectacular flush of red to crimson-orange blooms that emerge from the base of the stems in spring. The flowers are surprisingly large relative to the plant and open wide in bright light, creating a fiery halo around the entire clump. A cool nighttime temperature drop into the 45–55°F range is essential to triggering this bloom cycle.

Move it outside in summer and it handles balcony conditions without trouble, staying outdoors through autumn as long as it has shelter from rain. You can leave it up to ten days without water. The plant is pet friendly, cat friendly, and dog friendly, with no toxins to worry about, though the physical spines should stay away from curious paws.

  •   Rebutia Sanguinea Cactus grows in bright indirect light, partial sun, or direct sun, though it may scorch in intense south-facing windows during peak summer.

Water it deeply every 10–14 days in spring and summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter, always letting soil dry completely between waterings.

Rebutia Sanguinea does best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix with roughly 50 percent inorganic grit to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 50–85°F and should be kept above 40°F to avoid cold damage.

Rebutia Sanguinea is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a specialized low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer applied once monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating brief dips down to around 25°F in dry conditions. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Coastal areas of Oregon, warmer pockets of North Carolina, and select parts of Arkansas and Tennessee also fall within these zones, making this drought tolerant cactus suitable across the American South and West.
  • Q: Is Rebutia Sanguinea Cactus pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs, though the physical spines should be kept out of reach.

Q: What window direction works best for indoor growth?
A: Rebutia Sanguinea Cactus performs well in a bright south or west-facing window. North and east windows work if you supplement with grow light during winter.

Q: How big does Rebutia Sanguinea get?
A: Individual stems stay 2–3 inches tall, but the clump spreads wider as it matures, fitting comfortably in small pots and terrariums indefinitely.

Q: How do I trigger blooms on my plant?
A: Rebutia Sanguinea needs a cool nighttime drop to 45–55°F in late autumn and winter, combined with reduced watering, to bloom in spring.

Q: Can Blood Cactus survive a trip without a sitter?
A: It can remain unwatered for up to ten days without damage.

Q: What does overwatering look like on this plant?
A: Blood Cactus develops soft, translucent stems and root rot if soil stays wet; allow it to dry completely between waterings to prevent this.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
