The Purple Urchin with Assorted Tillandsia Air Plant is a charming natural pairing that combines the sculptural beauty of a sea urchin shell with the effortless appeal of a Tillandsia, a member of the Bromeliad family native to the forests, mountains, and deserts of Central and South America. Tillandsias are epiphytes, meaning they absorb water and nutrients through their leaves rather than roots, earning them the popular nickname "air plants." This set makes a distinctive gift and a conversation-starting addition to any home.
The purple sea urchin shell serves as a naturally hollowed vessel, cradling a small Tillandsia variety chosen from a rotating assortment of species. Air plant leaves are typically slender and arching, ranging in color from silvery green to deep green, often with fine trichomes that give the foliage a soft, frosted texture. Tillandsia air plants thrive in bright, indirect light. Place your Purple Urchin set near a window that receives several hours of filtered sunlight each day, ideally within one to three feet of an east or west-facing window. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves, but also avoid dim corners where insufficient light will slow growth and reduce vibrancy.
Water your air plant by gently misting it two to three times per week, or by submerging it in room-temperature water for 20 to 30 minutes once a week. After soaking, turn the plant upside down and shake off any excess water, then allow it to dry completely in a well-ventilated spot before returning it to the urchin shell. Standing water trapped at the base of the leaves can cause rot, so thorough drying is essential.
Tillandsias prefer temperatures between 50°F and 90°F (10°C to 32°C) and do well in the typical range of most indoor environments. They appreciate moderate humidity, making bathrooms and kitchens naturally suitable spots. Keep the plant away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heat sources, as sudden temperature swings can stress the foliage.
Fertilizing is optional but can encourage blooming and offset production. Use a bromeliad or Tillandsia-specific liquid fertilizer diluted to one quarter of the recommended strength, and add it to your soaking water once a month during spring and summer. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too many nutrients can harm the plant's delicate leaf trichomes.
