  •   Philodendron 'Joepii' is a rare aroid in the family Araceae, native to the tropical rainforests of French Guiana in South America. It was discovered growing epiphytically in the wild and remains one of the more sought-after collector aroids in cultivation today.

The leaves on 'Joepii' are its most immediately recognizable feature, developing a pronounced tri-lobed shape as the plant matures, with a broad upper lobe and two elongated lower lobes that extend outward. Young leaves emerge simple and oval before gradually taking on that distinctive three-part form. The foliage is forest green, with a smooth, semi-glossy surface, and individual leaves can reach considerable size on a mature specimen.

Flowering details for 'Joepii' in cultivation are not well documented, but it does produce pollen as part of its reproductive cycle, which may be a consideration for anyone with sensitivities. Like other tropical climbers, it filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins and actively purifies indoor air. It is sensitive to being moved once settled, so placing it in a stable spot from the start works better than relocating it later.

Keep 'Joepii' on a high shelf or in a spot that cats, dogs, and small children cannot easily reach. The sap can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, and ingesting any part of the plant is harmful to pets. This rare tropical climber thrives near kitchen moisture and does well under office LED lighting, where humidity tends to be more consistent. Rotating the pot every few weeks keeps growth even on all sides.

  •   Philodendron 'Joepii' grows best in bright indirect light and scorches in a south-facing window without a filter.

It needs watering every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Joepii' does best in a chunky, well-draining aroid mix of orchid bark, perlite, and potting soil.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning or heating vents.

'Joepii' is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during the spring and summer growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 35°F year-round. It grows outdoors in southern Florida, Hawaii, and parts of coastal southern California. It can also move outside for summer in warmer inland areas, brought back in before nighttime temperatures drop below 55°F.
  • Q: Is Philodendron 'Joepii' safe to have around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap can also irritate paws and skin on contact, so keep it out of reach.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Philodendron 'Joepii' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil before watering rather than going by a fixed schedule.

Q: Why are 'Joepii' leaves staying small and not developing the tri-lobed shape?
A: Young leaves are naturally oval and simple. The tri-lobed form develops as the plant matures, and providing a moss pole for it to climb can help larger, more developed leaves emerge sooner.

Q: How sensitive is it to being moved around the house?
A: 'Joepii' can drop leaves or stall growth after relocation. Once you find a spot with stable humidity and consistent light, leave it there rather than moving it from room to room.

Q: Can 'Joepii' handle low humidity indoors?
A: It needs high humidity, ideally above 60 percent. Dry air from heaters or air conditioners causes leaf edges to brown and slows growth noticeably.

Q: What kind of light does it need if I'm keeping it in an office?
A: 'Joepii' grows well under full-spectrum or grow-style LED office lighting placed close enough to provide consistent brightness throughout the day.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
