  •   Opuntia 'Goldie Rita', also called Goldie Rita Prickly Pear, is a cold-hardy cactus from the Cactaceae family native to arid regions of the Americas. It develops forest-green and turquoise pads that mature into a low, spreading form for dry gardens and container growing.

Each pad is flat and oval-shaped with a waxy surface and few visible spines. The foliage shifts from deep forest green to turquoise-blue tones, especially pronounced in cool weather. Growth remains slow and deliberate, building a dense cushion of pads over several seasons that reaches 3 to 5 inches at maturity.

Yellow flowers bloom in late spring to early summer when the plant reaches maturity, appearing in clusters along the pad edges. The blooms are short-lived but prolific under full sun and warm temperatures. Edible fruits may develop after flowering if conditions remain warm and sunny throughout the season.

Move it outside for the summer and it handles balcony wind without trouble. It can stay outdoors in autumn as temperatures drop, and it needs that night temperature drop to bloom reliably. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf out of reach of toddlers and pets. Propagate it easily from individual pads by allowing them to dry for a week, then pressing them into dry cactus soil. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Opuntia 'Goldie Rita' grows well in direct sun, though it tolerates low-light conditions indoors when needed.

Water it every 10 to 14 days during the growing season; reduce to monthly watering in winter.

'Goldie Rita' does best in fast-draining cactus or succulent mix with added perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 50 to 85°F and tolerates dry heated indoor air without issue.

'Goldie Rita' is a slow-growing cactus that grows fine without added fertilizer; apply diluted cactus fertilizer only once in early spring if desired.

It is hardy in USDA zones 5 to 10 and survives temperatures as low as negative 20°F outdoors. It grows outdoors year-round in southern California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, and Hawaii.
  • Q: How often should I water Opuntia 'Goldie Rita'?
A: Let the soil dry completely between waterings, then water thoroughly. In winter, space watering to once per month or skip it entirely.

Q: Can it handle indoor conditions?
A: Opuntia 'Goldie Rita' tolerates low light indoors but blooms and colors best with direct sun; place it near a south or west-facing window.

Q: Can I propagate 'Goldie Rita'?
A: Remove a pad, let it air-dry for 7 to 10 days until the cut calluses over, then press it into dry cactus soil and water lightly after 2 weeks.

    Q: Does it need humidity?
A: 'Goldie Rita' prefers low humidity; avoid misting or watering the foliage.

Q: Is Goldie Rita Prickly Pear safe around cats and dogs?
A: No, the sap irritates skin and paws, so it should be kept out of reach of pets and small children.

Q: How cold can it handle?
A: Goldie Rita Prickly Pear survives down to negative 20°F and grows outdoors year-round in zones 5 through 10.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
