    •   Maranta 'Massangeana', also called Black Prayer Plant, is a tropical foliage plant from the rainforests of Brazil, belonging to the Marantaceae family. It grows naturally on the forest floor, where it thrives in warm, humid conditions beneath a dense canopy.

        The leaves are oval and deep green, marked with dark feathery bands along the midrib that fade to near-black toward the edges. The undersides carry a deep purple-red tone, visible when the leaves fold upward at night in the classic prayer plant movement. 'Massangeana' stays low and spreading, with a soft, layered growth habit that fills out a pot or shallow container over time.

        Small white to pale lavender flowers can appear in warm months, growing on slender upright stems above the foliage. They are modest in size and have no notable fragrance. 'Massangeana' is also one of the few tropical houseplants confirmed to naturally humidify the surrounding air, and it actively purifies indoor air by filtering airborne toxins including formaldehyde.

        Keep it away from south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the leaf surface. It does well near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking and washing keeps humidity levels naturally elevated. This plant is pet friendly, and its compact spreading form fits well in a terrarium or grouped in a humid corner display. Rotate the pot every few weeks so all sides receive even light exposure, and keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, which dry the air and stress the foliage.

    •   Maranta Black grows best in bright indirect light, positioned a few feet back from an east or west-facing window.

        Water it every 7-10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings, and reduce frequency in winter.

        'Massangeana' does best in a well-draining, peat-based mix combined with perlite to retain some moisture without waterlogging.

        It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should not be exposed to anything below 55°F.

        'Massangeana' is a slow-growing plant; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength once a month during spring and summer.

        It is hardy in USDA zones 11-12, where frost does not occur. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii and the southernmost parts of Florida. In all other states, it performs best as a permanent indoor plant.

      A: It wilts slightly and the leaves begin to curl when the soil is too dry. Check the top inch of soil before each watering rather than going by a fixed schedule alone.

      A: Yes. Maranta Black is non-toxic and pet friendly, so it is safe to keep in homes with cats and dogs.

      A: It can grow under office LED lighting as long as the lights are on for a standard workday. Growth will be slower than near a natural window.

      A: 'Massangeana' tends to fade when the light is too low or when it has been moved to a new spot. It is also sensitive to relocation and may take a few weeks to settle before the patterning looks its best again.
