  •   Mammillaria Plumosa, also called Feather Cactus, is a rare collector cactus native to the rocky limestone hillsides of northeastern Mexico. It is a member of the Cactaceae family and grows as a clustering, drought-tolerant succulent that requires minimal care.

Dense, soft white feathery spines cover each tubercle, creating a fluffy, cloud-like appearance across the entire plant. Mammillaria Plumosa grows in a clumping habit, slowly spreading outward into a wide, cushion-like mound of individual heads that resembles a living snowball. The overall texture is almost impossible to mistake for any other small cactus.

Small pale pink to white flowers emerge in a ring around the crown of each head, typically blooming from late autumn through early winter. A drop in night temperature triggers flowering, so move it to a cooler spot during autumn evenings to encourage blooms. The flowers stand out against the dense white fuzz of the spines.

Mammillaria Plumosa releases oxygen at night and can survive up to ten days without water. Move it outside for summer on a patio or balcony, but keep it covered from rain since excess moisture causes rot. It is pet-friendly, though the sap can cause mild skin or paw irritation, so place it on a high shelf out of reach. It tolerates dry heated air and grows well under bright office LED lights when rotated regularly.

  •   Mammillaria Plumosa 'Feather Cactus' grows well in bright indirect light to full sun but can scorch in intense south-facing windows during summer.

Water it every 2-3 weeks in summer and reduce to once a month or less in winter.

Mammillaria Plumosa does best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix blended with 50% perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 50-85°F and should be brought indoors before temperatures drop below 25°F.

Mammillaria Plumosa is a slow grower needing only a light balanced cactus fertilizer once in spring and once in summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best with frost-free winters. It grows outdoors in California, Arizona, Nevada, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, Hawaii, and parts of Oregon and the Gulf Coast where winters stay mild and dry.
  • Q: Is Mammillaria Plumosa 'Feather Cactus' pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs, though the sap can cause mild skin or paw irritation, so keep it on a high shelf.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: Mammillaria Plumosa 'Feather Cactus' propagates easily by gently separating offsets from the mother clump in spring and allowing the cut end to callous for a day before potting in dry cactus mix.

Q: Why are the feathers on Mammillaria Plumosa turning yellow?
A: Yellowing is most often caused by overwatering or poor drainage. Check your soil immediately and reduce watering frequency.

Q: Can it grow under office LED lights?
A: Mammillaria Plumosa grows reasonably well under bright office LEDs when rotated regularly to ensure even light exposure.

Q: How long can Feather Cactus survive without water?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water during its growing season.

Q: Is it a good beginner cactus?
A: Feather Cactus requires minimal attention compared to other houseplants, needing only bright light and infrequent watering to thrive.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
