    •   Ledebouria socialis, also called Silver Squill, is a small succulent bulb native to South Africa. It forms tight clusters of upright leaves in forest green and white, with deep pink undersides that intensify in bright light.

The leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, and heavily mottled with silver-white variegation across forest green. Each leaf shows deep pink on the underside, a color that deepens when the plant receives direct sun. It grows in a low, compact rosette that spreads gradually via offshoots, staying modest in size even as a mature specimen. The foliage remains ornamental year-round, shifting slightly in hue with seasonal light changes.

Ledebouria socialis produces small, pale greenish-white flowers on thin spikes during spring and early summer. The blooms are modest and fragrant, appearing above the rosette but secondary to the leaf color that defines the plant's appeal. It can stay in leaf color alone for years without flowering indoors.

This slow-growing succulent tolerates dry heated air, so it adapts well to indoor climates with active heating or air conditioning without requiring misting. Move it outside in summer to a sheltered spot and it will harden off, returning indoors before frost. It can stay outdoors in autumn as temperatures remain mild. You can leave it up to ten days without water. Ledebouria socialis is sensitive to being moved frequently, so choose a stable location once placed. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach, as it should not be nibbled or eaten by cats and dogs. It is also best placed away from small children.

    •   Ledebouria socialis grows well in direct sun or low-light spots, adapting across a wide range of indoor brightness.

Water it every 10–14 days during spring and summer, every 3–4 weeks in winter, and let soil dry between waterings.

Ledebouria socialis does best in well-draining cactus or succulent mix, never in regular potting soil.

It prefers temperatures between 50–75°F and handles brief cold spells, but protect it from frost.

Ledebouria socialis is a slow-grower and needs no fertilizer; feed lightly once in spring if desired.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10–11, growing outdoors year-round in southern Florida, southern California, Arizona, Hawaii, and parts of Texas. Frost below 32°F will damage it, so it must be brought indoors in colder regions.

A Thoughtful Gift For: a plant-loving friend, your boss or coworker, gardeners who appreciate low-maintenance plants, a colleague or mentor

    • Q: How often should I water Ledebouria socialis?
A: Water during the growing season when the top inch of soil feels dry. In winter, extend the interval between waterings as growth slows and moisture needs drop.

Q: Does it need direct sun to develop pink undersides?
A: Direct sun intensifies the vivid pink color on leaf undersides. Low-light locations keep the leaves forest green and white, but still healthy.

Q: Is Ledebouria socialis sensitive to being moved?
A: Yes, it prefers to stay in one spot once placed. Moving it frequently can stress the plant and slow growth.

Q: What temperature range does it tolerate?
A: Ledebouria socialis handles temperatures between 50–75°F. Keep it away from direct heating vents and cold drafts from AC units.

Q: Can I grow Silver Squill outdoors in summer?
A: Move it outdoors to a sheltered spot during summer and it will grow well. Bring it back indoors before the first frost.

Q: Is Silver Squill safe for cats and dogs?
A: No. It should be kept on a high shelf out of reach of pets and not allowed to be nibbled or eaten.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
