  •   Hoya 'Sweetheart Variegated' (Hoya kerrii variegated) is a rare, semi-succulent vining plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Laos, and southern China. It has become highly sought after by collectors for its variegated foliage and trailing growth habit.

Each thick, waxy leaf is shaped like a heart and splashed with creamy white, pale yellow, and green variegation, with every leaf displaying its own unique pattern. The semi-succulent foliage holds moisture well, creating a sculptural presence on long, flexible vines that trail from hanging baskets or wind along shelves. Hoya Sweetheart Variegated develops slowly but steadily, building an impressive display over time as the vines lengthen and fill in.

When mature and given the right conditions, including a slight nighttime temperature drop, it produces small, star-shaped flower clusters in soft pink and white with a subtle sweet fragrance. Blooms are not frequent on young plants, so consistent care and seasonal temperature shifts encourage flowering.

You can leave it up to ten days without water. It grows well in terrariums, loves the ambient moisture near a kitchen, and benefits from a summer stint outdoors in a sheltered spot away from heavy rain. The plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs and purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other toxins while releasing oxygen at night. It is far less common than the all-green Hoya kerrii.

  •   Hoya 'Sweetheart Variegated' grows well in bright indirect light and adapts to medium light or office LEDs, but avoid direct south-facing sun where leaves scorch.

Water it every 10 to 14 days in spring and summer, cutting back to every 3 to 4 weeks in winter, letting soil dry between waterings.

Hoya Sweetheart Variegated does best in a well-draining mix of perlite, orchid bark, and a small amount of potting soil to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60 and 85°F and must be kept away from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and heater airflow.

Hoya Sweetheart Variegated is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer once monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where temperatures stay above 50°F year-round. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, coastal Southern California, South Texas, southern Arizona, and the southernmost parts of Louisiana and Mississippi. In Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, central California, Nevada, and coastal Oregon, it grows outdoors in warm months but needs to move indoors before autumn temperatures drop.
  • Q: What makes Hoya 'Sweetheart Variegated' different from regular Hoya kerrii?
A: The variegation sets it apart. Standard Hoya kerrii is solid green, while this version displays creamy white and pale yellow splashing across each heart-shaped leaf, making it far more rare and collectible.

Q: How long does it take to flower?
A: Hoya 'Sweetheart Variegated' typically flowers once it reaches maturity, which can take several years. Young plants focus energy on growing vines rather than blooms, so patience and consistent care are essential.

Q: Can Hoya Sweetheart Variegated tolerate low light?
A: It adapts to medium light and office LEDs but performs best in bright indirect light. In very low light, growth slows significantly and variegation may fade or concentrate toward leaf centers.

Q: How do I propagate it?
A: Hoya Sweetheart Variegated can be propagated from a stem cutting with at least one node, rooted in water or moist sphagnum moss. Single-leaf cuttings without a node will root but rarely produce new growth.

Q: Why are the leaves on Hoya Sweetheart Variegated turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves often result from overwatering or prolonged wet soil, cold air from AC or heating vents, or insufficient light. Check your watering schedule and move it away from direct airflow.

Q: Is it safe for homes with pets?
A: Hoya Sweetheart Variegated is non-toxic and completely safe for cats and dogs, making it an excellent choice for pet-owning households.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
