  •   Gasteria bicolor is a succulent in the Asphodelaceae family, native to the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, where it grows in rocky, shaded outcrops and scrubby coastal terrain. It belongs to a genus known for tongue-shaped, heavily marked leaves and a strong tolerance for low-light indoor conditions.

The leaves are thick, strap-shaped, and arranged in a stacked, distichous fan before gradually spiraling into a loose rosette as the plant matures. Each leaf is dark green with dense, irregular white spotting across the surface, giving it a mottled appearance. It grows upright and compact, with broad, substantial leaves that feel firm and waxy to the touch.

It produces tubular, coral-pink to orange-red flowers on tall, arching stalks, typically in late winter to spring. It blooms more freely when nighttime temperatures drop, which triggers the flowering cycle. Gasteria bicolor releases oxygen at night, a trait shared with many succulents in the Asphodelaceae family.

Deep roots develop as it matures, so a heavy pot with good weight helps prevent tipping. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, and cover it from rain to avoid waterlogged soil. It tolerates dry, heated indoor air and does well under office LED lighting. It is pet friendly.

  •   Gasteria bicolor grows well in bright indirect light and does well under office LEDs, away from direct south-facing sun that can scorch the leaf tips.

Water it every 10-14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings; reduce to once a month in winter.

Gasteria bicolor does best in a fast-draining cactus and succulent mix combined with coarse perlite or pumice for added drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 80°F and tolerates dry heated indoor air, but keep it away from direct airflow from AC vents or heaters.

Gasteria bicolor is a slow-growing succulent; feed it once in spring and once in summer with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F before frost damage occurs. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, and Hawaii. In zone 8 and cooler, move it indoors before the first frost.
  • Q: Is Gasteria bicolor safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is pet friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Q: How much light does this plant need?
A: Gasteria bicolor handles a north or east-facing window well and does fine several feet back from a bright window. Direct sun from a south-facing window will cause the leaf tips to scorch and bleach.

Q: Can Gasteria bicolor survive while I'm away on a trip?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: Overwatering is the most common cause. The soil must dry out completely between waterings, and the pot must have drainage holes to prevent water from sitting around the roots.

Q: How big does Gasteria bicolor get?
A: The overall plant can reach around 8-12 inches across at maturity, though growth is slow.

Q: Can I grow this plant in a pot outdoors during summer?
A: Yes, provided the container has drainage holes and adequate airflow to prevent rot. Keep it out of direct afternoon sun and cover it during rain to prevent waterlogged soil.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
