The plant forms a thick, cylindrical body covered in prominent golden to reddish spines arranged in regular patterns across blue-green skin. It grows as a solitary barrel that can reach 3 to 5 feet tall in its native habitat, though container specimens remain much smaller. The stem deepens in color under bright light, shifting toward greenish tones in shadier conditions.
Small yellow flowers bloom near the crown of the plant in late spring to early summer, appearing in clusters along the upper portions of the stem. The blooms are followed by yellowish fruits that persist on the plant for an extended period.
It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 85°F and tolerates dry heated air from heaters and air conditioning without difficulty.

Q: How often should I water Ferocactus viridescens?
A: Every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season, letting soil dry completely between waterings. In winter, water once monthly or when the soil has been dry for several weeks.
Q: Will the spines hurt if I touch it accidentally?
A: Yes, the spines are sharp and can cause injury if brushed against. Place it away from high-traffic areas and where you might brush past it unintentionally.
Q: Is this plant safe for my cats and dogs?
A: Ferocactus viridescens is non-toxic and pet-friendly, though the sharp spines pose a physical hazard if the plant tips over or a pet brushes against it.
Q: Can San Diego Barrel Cactus survive outdoors year-round?
A: It survives year-round outdoors in southern California, Arizona, southern Florida, and Hawaii where frost does not occur. Move it indoors or protect it in colder regions.
Q: How large does San Diego Barrel Cactus grow in a pot?
A: Container specimens typically remain under 2 feet tall, growing much slower than plants in the ground where they can reach 3 to 5 feet over many decades.
