  •   Ferocactus glaucescens, also called Blue Barrel Cactus, is a drought-tolerant barrel cactus native to central Mexico's desert regions. It has adapted to thrive in harsh, arid conditions with minimal water and belongs to the Ferocactus genus, a family of hardy, slow-growing cacti.

It has blue-green coloration that distinguishes it from other barrel varieties. The plant develops a spherical shape when young, gradually elongating into a cylindrical form as it matures, with sharp vertical ribs running the length of its body. Golden-yellow spines cluster densely along these ribs, creating prominent textured ridges across the surface.

Ferocactus glaucescens produces yellow flowers that emerge from the crown during summer months on mature specimens. Flowering typically occurs only on older plants and creates contrast against the blue-tinged body. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

You can place it on a high shelf with full sun exposure or move it outside in summer. It handles balcony wind and drafty indoor spots without trouble. Keep it away from small children and curious pets due to its sharp spines, though it is non-toxic if accidentally ingested. It works equally well as a container plant indoors or as a permanent outdoor specimen in warm climates.

  •   Ferocactus glaucescens - Blue Barrel Cactus grows in full sun and direct sunlight for optimal growth and blue coloration.

Water it deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry completely between waterings every 2 to 3 weeks.

Ferocactus glaucescens grows best in well-draining cactus mix containing sand, perlite, and pumice for proper drainage.

It prefers temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit but requires protection from frost below 32 degrees.

Ferocactus glaucescens is a slow-growing cactus that adds only 1 to 2 inches yearly and needs minimal fertilizer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11 and tolerates brief exposure to temperatures near 25 degrees Fahrenheit when kept dry. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, southern Georgia, coastal South Carolina, Nevada, and southern Alabama and Mississippi. In colder regions, grow it as a container plant and move it indoors during winter.
  • Q: How often should I water Ferocactus glaucescens - Blue Barrel Cactus?
A: Water deeply every 2 to 3 weeks during the growing season, then reduce to once monthly or less in winter once soil has dried completely.

Q: Is this cactus safe around pets?
A: Ferocactus glaucescens - Blue Barrel Cactus is non-toxic and safe for cats and dogs, though the sharp spines can cause injury if the plant is knocked over.

Q: How much light does Ferocactus glaucescens need?
A: It benefits from direct sunlight in a south or west-facing window and can adjust to intense sun exposure when introduced gradually over several weeks.

Q: What is the growth rate?
A: Ferocactus glaucescens grows slowly, adding only 1 to 2 inches per year and taking 10 to 15 years to reach mature flowering size.

Q: Can Blue Barrel Cactus be grown outdoors in cold climates?
A: Only in zones 9 through 11 where temperatures rarely drop below 25 degrees Fahrenheit; grow it in containers and bring indoors for winter in colder areas.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Blue Barrel Cactus is typically propagated from seed in warm temperatures with well-draining soil, as it rarely produces offsets.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
