  •   Pteris ensiformis, also called Silver Lace Fern, is a tropical fern in the Pteridaceae family, native to Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands. It grows naturally in humid forest floors and shaded rocky slopes, where moisture and filtered light are constant.

The fronds are two-toned, with deep green outer edges and a broad white or silvery stripe running along each leaflet's center. Leaves are lance-shaped and finely divided, giving the plant a layered, feathery appearance. Pteris ensiformis stays compact, typically reaching 12 to 18 inches tall, with an upright, tidy growth habit.

Like most ferns, Pteris ensiformis does not produce flowers. It reproduces through spores, which appear as small brown dots along the undersides of mature fronds. This plant is pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs, and it actively purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins.

Place it in a kitchen or bathroom where ambient moisture stays naturally higher. It works well inside a terrarium, where humidity stays consistent and indirect light is easy to maintain. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as dry or moving air causes the fronds to brown. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, with cover from rain to prevent frond damage, and bring it back in before temperatures drop.

  •   Fern 'Silver Lace' thrives in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where fronds can scorch.

It needs water when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every five to seven days in warm months.

Pteris ensiformis does best in a peat-based or coco coir mix with added perlite for drainage and moisture retention.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and browns quickly when exposed to cold drafts or dry heated air.

Pteris ensiformis is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer once a month in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 to 12, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 25°F to 30°F briefly. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, California, Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, Arizona, and South Carolina. It can also spend summers outdoors in zone 8 states like Oregon and North Carolina with appropriate shelter.
  • Q: Can Fern 'Silver Lace' grow under office LED lighting?
A: It can manage under bright, full-spectrum LEDs placed close enough to provide consistent light throughout the day, though fronds may be smaller than in natural indirect light.

Q: How do I know when this plant needs water?
A: Fern 'Silver Lace' wilts slightly and the fronds begin to droop when it has gone too long without water. Check the top inch of soil before watering rather than following a fixed schedule.

Q: Is Pteris ensiformis a good plant for terrariums?
A: It is well-suited for closed or open terrariums where humidity stays high and direct airflow is limited. Just make sure the container allows enough vertical space for the fronds to grow upright.

Q: How sensitive is this plant to being moved around?
A: Pteris ensiformis responds to relocation by dropping fronds or showing browning at the tips. Once you find a stable spot with consistent humidity and indirect light, keep it there and rotate it occasionally for even growth instead of moving it across the room.

Q: Is Silver Lace Fern safe for cats and dogs?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs. If you have pets that like to chew on leaves, placing it on a higher shelf keeps the fronds intact without any safety concern.

Q: How do I raise humidity for this plant indoors?
A: Silver Lace Fern does well grouped with other plants, set on a pebble tray with water, or placed in a naturally humid room like a kitchen or bathroom. A humidifier nearby also keeps fronds from browning at the edges.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
