  •   Microsorum Diversifolium (Kangaroo Paw Fern) is an epiphytic fern native to Australia and New Zealand, where it grows on rocks, tree trunks, and forest floors in humid, shaded environments. It belongs to the Polypodiaceae family and spreads naturally through creeping rhizomes across mossy surfaces.

The fronds are glossy, dark green, and leathery, with a wavy or lobed edge that varies considerably from frond to frond on the same plant. Younger growth emerges lighter green and hardens to a deeper tone as it matures. The rhizomes creep visibly along the soil surface, often extending over the pot edge, and the trailing stems make a hanging basket a natural fit.

Kangaroo Paw Fern does not produce flowers. It reproduces through spores, which form in round clusters called sori on the undersides of mature fronds. It purifies indoor air and naturally adds moisture to the surrounding air through transpiration.

A hanging hook lets the trailing fronds spread freely downward rather than bunch up in a standard pot. Kangaroo Paw Fern fits well inside a terrarium, where the enclosed humidity suits its needs. It thrives near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking keeps the air around it consistently damp. Move it outside in summer once temperatures are reliably warm, and bring it back in before the first frost. This plant is pet friendly.

  •   Microsorum Diversifolium (Kangaroo Paw Fern) grows well under bright indirect light, including standard office LED fixtures. Avoid south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the fronds.

Water it every seven to ten days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. It wilts slightly when dry.

Kangaroo Paw Fern does best in a loose, well-draining mix of peat and perlite or a quality orchid bark blend.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning vents or heating units nearby.

Kangaroo Paw Fern grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 11, tolerating outdoor conditions where temperatures stay above 25°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, California, Texas, Arizona, Louisiana, Georgia, Hawaii, and South Carolina. It can spend summer and autumn outside in zone 8 states like Oregon and Washington before coming back indoors before frost.
  • Q: Is Microsorum Diversifolium (Kangaroo Paw Fern) safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and is considered pet friendly.

Q: How do I know if I'm overwatering my fern?
A: Microsorum Diversifolium (Kangaroo Paw Fern) will develop yellowing fronds and soggy, compacted soil if it receives too much water. The rhizomes may also begin to rot at the base before the fronds show visible damage.

Q: Which window direction works best for Kangaroo Paw Fern?
A: East or north-facing windows work well, keeping the fronds out of direct sun. A south window will scorch the leaves, and a west window is fine if the plant sits a few feet back from the glass.

Q: Can I grow this fern in a terrarium?
A: Kangaroo Paw Fern fits well in a closed or semi-closed terrarium, where humidity stays consistently high around the plant.

Q: Does Kangaroo Paw Fern need to be rotated?
A: Rotating the pot a quarter turn every couple of weeks helps all sides of the plant receive even light exposure and keeps growth balanced.

Q: Can this fern go outside in summer?
A: Kangaroo Paw Fern can move outside once nighttime temperatures stay reliably above 55°F. Place it in a shaded or dappled-light spot, and bring it back indoors before the first frost.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
