  •   Blue Star Fern (Phlebodium aureum), also called golden polypody, is an epiphytic fern native to tropical regions of South and Central America. In the wild, it grows on tree trunks and in the forks of branches, drawing moisture from humid air rather than deep soil.

The fronds are broad and deeply lobed, growing in a loose, arching form that spreads outward from a central rhizome. The color sits in a blue-green range, cooler and more silvery than most houseplant ferns. The surface of each frond has a slightly waxy, leathery texture, and the underside develops rows of golden-orange spore clusters as the plant matures.

As a fern, Phlebodium aureum does not produce flowers. It does, however, purify indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other toxins from its environment. The creeping rhizome is covered in orange-brown scales and grows along the soil surface, giving the plant a distinctive layered structure at the base.

Keep Fern away from south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the fronds. It thrives near kitchen moisture and does well inside a terrarium where humidity stays consistently high. Fern is sensitive to being moved, so once you find a spot that works, leave it there. This plant is pet friendly and safe around cats and dogs.

  •   Blue Star Fern grows well in bright indirect light and tolerates medium light comfortably.

It needs watering every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

Fern does best in a loose, well-draining mix of peat or coco coir with added perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from AC or heating vents.

Fern is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a diluted balanced fertilizer once a month in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9 through 12, tolerating minimum temperatures down to around 25°F to 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, and Georgia. It can also be moved outside for summer in warmer parts of zone 8, including coastal areas of South Carolina and Oregon.
  • Q: Is Blue Star Fern safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet friendly, so it is safe to keep around cats and dogs.

Q: How much humidity does this fern need?
A: Blue Star Fern needs high humidity, ideally above 50 to 60 percent. A terrarium, bathroom, or kitchen shelf are all good placements.

Q: Which window direction works best for Fern?
A: An east or north-facing window works well. Avoid south-facing windows, where the fronds can scorch from too much direct light.

Q: What happens if I overwater this plant?
A: Fern develops root rot if the soil stays soggy for too long. Yellow, limp fronds and a soggy rhizome are signs the watering schedule is too frequent.

Q: Can Fern handle being repotted or moved often?
A: It is sensitive to being relocated and may drop fronds or stall after a move. Pick a stable spot and repot only when rootbound.

Q: Does this plant do well under office lighting?
A: Fern grows under standard office LED lighting as long as the fixture is close enough to provide consistent medium light throughout the day.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
