    •   English Ivy 'Kolibre', also called common ivy, is a variegated trailing houseplant from the Hedera genus, native to Europe and western Asia. It has been widely cultivated as both an indoor vine plant and outdoor ground cover across temperate regions.

        The leaves are small and heart-shaped, patterned in deep green with creamy white variegated margins that extend across much of each leaf. Kolibre English Ivy produces long, flexible vines that trail and climb, with nodes spaced along each stem where new roots can form. The foliage stays compact compared to many other Hedera helix cultivars, with leaves sitting close along each vine.

        Flowering on this cultivar is infrequent indoors and not a primary feature; when it does bloom, the flowers are small and inconspicuous. Instead, Kolibre English Ivy is well-known as an air purifying plant that filters formaldehyde and other toxins from indoor spaces. It also wilts slightly when the soil has dried out, giving a visible cue that water is needed.

        Hang it in a basket near a kitchen window, where ambient moisture from cooking keeps humidity levels up. You can move it outside for summer and leave it on a patio through autumn, as it handles cooler seasonal temperatures well. Cats, dogs, and small children should not be left to handle or nibble it, as the sap can irritate skin and paws, and the plant is harmful if ingested. Keep it on a high shelf or in a hanging position out of reach.

    •   English Ivy 'Kolibre' grows well in medium light or bright indirect light, and tolerates office LED conditions.

        Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

        Kolibre English Ivy does best in a well-draining potting mix with added perlite to prevent waterlogging.

        It prefers temperatures between 50°F and 75°F and is sensitive to dry air from air conditioning or heaters placed nearby.

        Kolibre English Ivy grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

        It is hardy in USDA zones 5 through 9, tolerating brief dips to around -20°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia, Oregon, Washington, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Arizona, New Mexico, and Louisiana. It also overwinters outdoors across much of the Mid-Atlantic and Pacific Northwest regions within those zones.

    • Q: Is English Ivy 'Kolibre' safe for cats and dogs?
      A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat it, as the sap can irritate paws and skin, and ingestion is harmful. Keep it on a high shelf or in a hanging basket out of reach.

      Q: How much light does this plant actually need near a window?
      A: English Ivy 'Kolibre' does well within three to five feet of an east- or north-facing window. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves, so keep it back or use a sheer curtain to filter the light.

      A: Cut a stem just below a node, place it in water or moist potting mix, and roots form within a few weeks. Using stems with at least two or three nodes gives the best results.
