  •   Elkhorn Plant Rhombophyllum, also called Elkhorn Plant, is a rare South African succulent from the Aizoaceae family native to the arid Eastern Cape. It evolved in rocky, sun-baked terrain where water is scarce, and this adaptation means it tolerates dry indoor air and periodic neglect.

The plant earns its common name from distinctive hatchet- or elkhorn-shaped leaves that grow in upright clumps. Leaves are thick and fleshy, colored blue-green to grey-green, with a keeled underside and small teeth along the edges. The compact clumping growth style makes it well-suited to small pots and dish gardens.

Bright yellow, daisy-like flowers emerge in spring and summer, opening in response to sunlight and closing at night. A nighttime temperature drop during the growing season encourages more prolific blooming.

Rhombophyllum Elkhorn survives up to ten days without water and handles dry heated indoor air with ease. Keep it on a high shelf away from pets and toddlers, as ingestion can cause harm and the sap may irritate skin or paws. Move it outside in summer to a sunny spot, but protect it from heavy rain and bring it indoors before autumn temperatures drop.

  •   Elkhorn Plant Rhombophyllum grows well in partial to full sun with 4-6 hours of direct light daily and benefits from rotating for even growth.

Water it deeply every 2-3 weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less in winter when dormant.

Rhombophyllum Elkhorn does best in a fast-draining mix of 50% coarse sand or perlite blended with cactus or succulent potting soil.

It prefers temperatures between 50-85°F and should be kept above 40°F to avoid cold damage.

Rhombophyllum Elkhorn is a slow-growing succulent; feed it lightly once in spring with diluted balanced fertilizer to support seasonal growth.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best with frost-free winters. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi. It can also thrive outdoors with minimal winter protection along the mild Oregon coast and in sheltered spots in New Mexico and parts of Arkansas.
  • Q: Is Elkhorn Plant Rhombophyllum safe for pets?
A: No. It can be harmful if ingested by pets, and its sap may cause skin or paw irritation, so keep it well out of reach of cats, dogs, and curious toddlers.

Q: How do I know if I'm overwatering?
A: Elkhorn Plant Rhombophyllum develops yellow leaves when overwatered or in poorly draining soil. Check the base of the plant; soft or translucent leaves indicate root rot has begun.

Q: Can Rhombophyllum Elkhorn be propagated?
A: Yes. Gently separate offsets from the base of the clump and pot them in dry, well-draining succulent mix, allowing cut ends to callous for a day or two before planting to prevent rot.

Q: Will this plant flower indoors?
A: Rhombophyllum Elkhorn produces bright yellow, daisy-like blooms indoors during spring and summer when given sufficient light and a cool nighttime environment to encourage flowering.

Q: Can Elkhorn Plant tolerate neglect?
A: Yes. It survives extended periods between waterings and handles dry air, making it suitable for indoor or outdoor growing.

Q: What window placement works best?
A: Elkhorn Plant performs best in a bright south- or west-facing window providing 4-6 hours of direct sunlight daily; insufficient light leads to stretched, pale growth and fewer flowers.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
