  •   Echinopsis Cristata, also called Caterpillar Cactus, is a rare crested cactus born from a genetic mutation that fans the growing tip into rippling, wave-like ridges instead of a typical columnar form. Native to South America, wild Echinopsis species grow on rocky, sun-drenched hillsides and open scrubland. This collector cactus is sought after as a sculptural specimen among enthusiasts, and finding a mature example is a genuine treasure.

It is instantly recognizable by its undulating, brain-like crest that sprawls and folds in on itself with a deeply textured, ribbed surface. The body is forest green, edged with clusters of white spines that contrast sharply against the foliage. Its clumping, upright growth habit creates a bold form that works equally well on a floor display or elevated on a shelf.

When conditions are right, it can produce large, vivid blooms in spring or summer, often triggered by cooler night temperatures. Because this is a crested mutation, flowering can be less predictable than in standard Echinopsis species, but the display is unforgettable when it does appear.

Move it outside for summer sun, though it needs cover from rain to protect the crest from rot. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach of curious toddlers since the spines are sharp. It is pet friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. Mature specimens and starter plants both offer heirloom appeal for collectors who appreciate a rare specimen.

  •   Echinopsis f. cristata - Caterpillar Cactus grows well in bright indirect light to full direct sun, ideally positioned near a south or east-facing window.

Water it every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer, cutting back to once a month or less in fall and winter.

Echinopsis Cristata grows best in a gritty, fast-draining cactus mix blended with at least 50% perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 60-95°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

Echinopsis Cristata is a slow-growing cactus that benefits from a light balanced fertilizer once monthly during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9-11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best when protected from frost. It grows outdoors year-round across California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, Mississippi, and coastal Oregon. Parts of New Mexico, Arkansas, and the warmer pockets of North Carolina and Virginia can also support this rare crested cactus with seasonal protection during cold snaps.
  • Q: Is Echinopsis f. cristata - Caterpillar Cactus pet friendly?
A: It is non-toxic to cats and dogs. Keep it on a high shelf since the spines can cause physical irritation to curious paws or hands.

Q: What causes yellowing on the crest and body?
A: Echinopsis f. cristata - Caterpillar Cactus typically yellows from overwatering or poor drainage trapping moisture at the roots, though insufficient light or drafts from air vents can also trigger it.

Q: Can Echinopsis Cristata handle direct sun without scorching?
A: It loves direct sun but can scorch if moved suddenly into intense south-facing light without gradual acclimatization. Rotate it regularly for even growth across the entire crest.

Q: How do I propagate this collector cactus?
A: Echinopsis Cristata produces offset pups at the base that can be carefully removed, allowed to callous for several days, then planted in dry cactus mix. Note that crested offsets may revert to normal columnar growth rather than producing another crested specimen.

Q: Can Caterpillar Cactus survive while traveling?
A: You can leave it up to ten days without water. Ensure it has adequate light and is not sitting in a cold draft before you leave.

Q: What window placement works best indoors?
A: Caterpillar Cactus grows well in a bright south or east-facing window where it receives several hours of direct light daily. If only north or west-facing windows are available, place it as close to the window as possible to maximize brightness.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
