  •   Dracaena Marginata Cane, also called the Dragon Tree, is a tropical houseplant native to Madagascar and parts of the Indian Ocean islands. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and grows naturally in dry, rocky terrain, which shapes how it handles water and light indoors.

Long, narrow leaves grow in dense tufts at the tips of bare woody canes, each leaf edged in a thin line of burgundy-red. The canes themselves are slender and upright, often reaching several feet tall indoors, with leaf scars left behind as lower leaves shed naturally over time. The red-edged leaves against the grey-green canes give the plant a look that stands out among other common dracaena varieties.

Dragon Tree rarely flowers indoors, and when it does, the blooms are small and white, appearing on mature plants in very specific conditions. More consistent are its air-purifying qualities — it filters formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the surrounding air. It grows well under standard office LED lighting, which makes it one of the few tall indoor plants that holds up in low-natural-light environments.

Rotate Dragon Tree a quarter turn every few weeks so all sides receive even light exposure. It wilts slightly when dry, which tells you it's time to water. You can leave it up to ten days without water between waterings, and it tolerates dry heated indoor air without issue. Move it outside for the summer, but place it somewhere protected from direct rainfall and strong midday sun, which will scorch the leaves. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as blowing air from either causes leaf stress. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed away from small children. A high shelf or a spot in a room they don't access works well for this.

  •   Dracaena Marginata Cane grows well in bright indirect light and also manages in medium light under office LEDs, but direct south-facing sun scorches the leaves.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch or two of soil to dry out between waterings.

Dragon Tree does best in a well-draining potting mix, such as a standard indoor blend combined with perlite to prevent waterlogging.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and should be kept away from cold drafts or sudden temperature swings below 55°F.

Dragon Tree is a slow-growing plant, gaining roughly 6 to 12 inches per year indoors, and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay well above 32°F through the year. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, Southern California, and southern Texas, where the climate stays warm enough year-round to support it in garden beds or containers outside.
  • Q: How much light does Dracaena Marginata Cane need?
A: Keep it a few feet back from a bright window, out of direct rays. East or north-facing windows work well indoors, and it also holds up under standard office LED lighting.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Dracaena Marginata Cane wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch or two of soil before watering rather than going by a fixed schedule alone.

Q: Is Dragon Tree safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it. Keep it on a high shelf or in a room pets don't have access to.

Q: How tall does it grow indoors?
A: Dragon Tree reaches around 5 to 6 feet tall indoors over several years, growing slowly at roughly 6 to 12 inches per year.

Q: Can Dragon Tree go outside in summer?
A: Yes, move it outside once temperatures are consistently above 65°F. Place it in bright shade or dappled light, away from heavy rain and direct midday sun, which will scorch the leaves.

Q: What happens if it gets too much water?
A: Dragon Tree is sensitive to overwatering. Soggy soil leads to root rot, and the lower leaves may yellow and fall faster than normal. Let the soil partially dry between waterings.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
