  •   Dracaena 'Colorama', also called the Colorama Dragon Tree, is a cultivar of Dracaena marginata native to Madagascar, where it grows as an understory tree in tropical dry forests. It belongs to the Asparagaceae family and has been widely grown indoors across the world for its upright form and distinctive foliage.

Long, narrow leaves grow in dense tufts at the tips of woody canes, each leaf edged in deep magenta-red with a center stripe of forest green and a band of white or cream between. The color is vivid even in lower light conditions, with the contrast between the dark red margins and lighter center remaining consistent year-round. Canes grow slowly taller over time, leaving a ringed, bare trunk below each new crown of leaves.

Mature Colorama Dragon Trees grown in ideal conditions can produce small, fragrant white flowers on branching stems, though blooming is rare indoors and not guaranteed. In the meantime, it actively filters indoor air, pulling formaldehyde and other toxins out of the surrounding environment as a confirmed air-purifying houseplant. Rotating the pot a quarter turn every few weeks keeps the leaf tufts growing evenly on all sides.

Move it outside for summer once nighttime temperatures stay consistently above 55°F, but place it under a covered patio or overhang to protect it from direct rain. Colorama Dragon Tree is sensitive to being moved and may drop a few leaves after a location change. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as dry blowing air from either can cause leaf tip browning, though it does tolerate the general dryness of heated indoor air. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to the leaves or sap, so a high shelf or out-of-reach spot works well. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and the sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact.

  •   Dracaena 'Colorama' grows well under standard office LED lighting and in bright indirect light from east or west-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Colorama Dragon Tree does best in a well-draining mix of potting soil combined with perlite or coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should not be exposed to air below 50°F.

Colorama Dragon Tree grows slowly upright and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay well above 32°F year-round. It grows outdoors in southern Florida, Hawaii, coastal Southern California, and parts of Arizona and Texas with mild winters. It overwinters outdoors in Puerto Rico and other US territories that fall within those zones.
  • Q: Is Dracaena 'Colorama' safe for pets and children?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't nibble or eat the plant, and the sap can cause skin or paw irritation on contact. Keep it on a high shelf away from small children as well.

Q: Why are the leaves turning yellow?
A: Dracaena 'Colorama' most commonly yellows from overwatering, especially if the soil stays wet for extended periods. Fluoride in tap water can also cause yellowing or brown leaf tips over time, so switching to filtered or distilled water can help.

Q: Can Colorama Dragon Tree survive near an air conditioner or heater?
A: Keep it away from direct airflow from vents. Blowing air from AC units or heaters dries out the leaf tips, though it handles the general low humidity of a heated room without issue.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Colorama Dragon Tree propagates from stem cuttings. Cut a healthy cane section several inches long, let the cut end dry briefly, then place it in moist soil or water until roots develop.

Q: Can Colorama Dragon Tree handle a south-facing window?
A: Direct sun through a south-facing window scorches the leaves. Place it several feet back from a south window or move it to an east or west-facing exposure instead.

Q: How long can this plant go without water?
A: Colorama Dragon Tree can go up to ten days without watering. If the leaves begin to wilt slightly or the soil is bone dry several inches down, it is ready for a drink.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
