  •   Cryptanthus 'Pink Star', also called Earth Star, is a bromeliad native to the forest floors of Brazil, where it grows low to the ground beneath the tree canopy. It belongs to the family Bromeliaceae and is one of the few bromeliads that roots into soil rather than growing as an epiphyte.

'Pink Star' forms a flat, star-shaped rosette that spreads low and wide, with strap-like leaves edged in wavy, serrated margins. The leaves are banded in shades of green, cream, and rose-pink, with a metallic sheen across the surface. It stays compact, typically reaching 6 to 8 inches across, and holds its rosette shape close to the soil.

Small white flowers can emerge from the center of the rosette, though blooming is infrequent indoors and the flowers are modest in size. 'Pink Star' is grown primarily for its year-round leaf pattern rather than its blooms. This plant is pet friendly, and it also purifies indoor air while naturally humidifying the air around it.

Terrariums suit it well, as the enclosed environment holds the high humidity it needs. It also does well placed near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking keeps the air around it consistently humid. Keep it away from heating vents and air conditioning units, as dry or blowing air causes the leaf tips to brown. Propagation happens through offsets, called pups, that form at the base of the rosette once the mother plant has bloomed. Detach a pup when it reaches about a third of the mother plant's size and pot it into a fresh, well-draining mix.

  •   Cryptanthus 'Pink Star' - 4" Pot grows best in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves; an east or north-facing window works better.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. It wilts slightly when dry, and overwatering leads to root rot.

'Pink Star' does best in a loose, well-draining mix such as a bromeliad or orchid blend combined with perlite. Good drainage at the root level prevents waterlogging.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 80°F and does not tolerate cold drafts or sudden temperature swings. Keep it away from exterior doors in winter.

'Pink Star' is a slow grower, spreading gradually outward rather than gaining height. Feed it with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer once a month during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, southern Texas, Arizona, and Louisiana. It can move outside for summer in warmer months across zones 8 and 9, but should come back indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 50°F.
  • Q: Is Cryptanthus 'Pink Star' - 4" Pot safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs and is safe to keep in homes with pets.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Cryptanthus 'Pink Star' - 4" Pot wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil before each watering rather than following a fixed schedule.

Q: Why are 'Pink Star's leaves turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves are usually a sign of overwatering. Let the soil dry out more between waterings and check that the pot drains freely.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: 'Pink Star' produces small offsets, called pups, around the base after blooming. Separate a pup once it reaches about a third the size of the mother plant and pot it into fresh, well-draining mix.

Q: Does Earth Star need high humidity?
A: Yes, it does best with consistently humid air. A terrarium, a spot near the kitchen, or a pebble tray with water beneath the pot all help maintain the humidity level it needs.

Q: What is the best placement for Earth Star indoors?
A: Earth Star grows well in a terrarium or on a surface near a kitchen window, where it gets bright indirect light and ambient moisture. Avoid placing it near air conditioning vents or heating units.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
