  •   Croton 'Iceton' (Codiaeum variegatum) is a tropical shrub native to the forests of Southeast Asia, Malaysia, and the Pacific Islands, where it grows in warm, humid conditions beneath a forest canopy. It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family and has been widely cultivated as a tropical houseplant for its bold, colorful leaves and upright shrub form.

The leaves of 'Iceton' are broad, glossy, and lance-shaped, emerging in shades of bright yellow and green before maturing into tones of orange, red, and deep burgundy-red as they age. New growth tends to appear at the top in lighter colors, while older leaves lower on the stem deepen into darker hues, so the plant carries multiple colors at once across its upright form. The foliage is firm and waxy, with prominent veining that can shift color along with the leaf surface.

'Iceton' occasionally produces small, star-shaped flowers on slender stalks, though it is grown almost entirely for its leaves rather than its blooms. The flowers are inconspicuous and appear infrequently indoors. It does produce sap, which can cause skin and paw irritation on contact, so handling it with bare hands is best avoided.

Rotate 'Iceton' regularly so each side receives even light exposure, as one-sided growth is common when it stays in a fixed position. It benefits from the ambient moisture near a kitchen or bathroom, where humidity levels are naturally higher. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, as dry or forcefully moving air affects the foliage. Move it outside in summer, but bring it back in before temperatures drop in autumn. It should be placed on a high shelf or in a spot that is out of reach of pets, as cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, and it is best placed away from small children as well.

  •   Croton 'Iceton' grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct sun that can scorch the leaves.

Water it thoroughly every 7-10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

'Iceton' does best in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 85°F and should not be exposed to drafts or sudden temperature shifts.

'Iceton' grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11-12, where frost does not occur and temperatures stay above 50°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii and the warmest parts of southern Florida and coastal California. It can also spend summers outdoors in other states when temperatures are reliably warm, then move back inside before autumn temperatures fall.
  • Q: How much light does Croton 'Iceton' need indoors?
A: An east- or west-facing window works well, keeping it a foot or two back from the glass. South-facing windows can scorch the leaves, so avoid placing it directly in a south-facing spot without a sheer curtain to filter the light.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Croton 'Iceton' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering rather than following a fixed schedule.

Q: Is 'Iceton' sensitive to being moved around the house?
A: Yes, it drops leaves when relocated, especially if the light or temperature conditions change noticeably. Pick a stable spot and leave it there as long as possible.

Q: What humidity level does this plant need?
A: 'Iceton' does best when indoor humidity stays above 50%. Placing it near a kitchen sink or misting the leaves a few times a week helps maintain that level.

Q: Can 'Iceton' go outside during the summer?
A: It can move outside once nighttime temperatures are consistently above 60°F. Bring it back in well before the first autumn cool-down, as a sudden temperature drop triggers leaf loss.

Q: Is this plant safe around pets and children?
A: 'Iceton' should be kept out of reach of pets, as cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it. The sap can also cause skin irritation, so it is best placed away from small children too.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
