  •   Aglaonema 'Silver Bay', also called Chinese Evergreen, is a tropical foliage plant in the family Araceae, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. It grows naturally on the shaded floor of humid forests, which shapes its tolerance for lower light and warm indoor conditions.

The leaves are broad, lance-shaped, and can reach up to twelve inches long, with a silver-green center that fades toward darker green edges. Each leaf surface has a subtle texture, and new growth emerges from the center of the plant in a layered, upright habit. Rotating the pot regularly keeps growth even on all sides, since the foliage reaches toward the nearest light source over time.

'Silver Bay' occasionally produces small, spathe-type flowers similar to those of other Araceae members, though it is grown primarily for its foliage rather than its blooms. It actively filters indoor air, pulling formaldehyde and other airborne toxins out of the environment. Placing it near a kitchen takes advantage of the ambient moisture produced there, which supports leaf health.

You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. 'Silver Bay' grows well under standard office fluorescent or LED lighting without needing a window at all. Keep it away from south-facing windows, where direct sun scorches the leaves. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to the plant, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant is harmful if ingested. Placing it on a high shelf keeps it out of reach. The sap can also irritate bare skin during handling, so washing hands after repotting is a good habit.

  •   Chinese Evergreen 'Silver Bay' grows well in medium to bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure.

Water it every ten to fourteen days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Silver Bay' does best in a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and suffers near air conditioning vents or heating units.

'Silver Bay' is a slow to moderate grower, and a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly supports steady growth in spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 through 12, where frost is not a factor and temperatures stay above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and southern Texas. It also grows outside in parts of Arizona, Louisiana, and other Gulf Coast areas that fall within those zones.
  • Q: Can Chinese Evergreen 'Silver Bay' survive in an office with no natural light?
A: It grows well under standard fluorescent and LED office lighting without a window nearby.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Chinese Evergreen 'Silver Bay' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long, and the leaves may feel softer than usual. Checking the top inch of soil before watering helps avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

Q: Is 'Silver Bay' safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should be kept away from it. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and the plant is harmful if chewed or eaten. A high shelf works well for keeping it out of reach.

Q: How big does this plant get indoors?
A: 'Silver Bay' typically reaches two to three feet tall and about two feet wide at maturity indoors, growing at a slow to moderate pace.

Q: Can Chinese Evergreen be moved outside during warmer months?
A: It can be moved outside in autumn or during warm summer months, but it needs shelter from rain and must be placed in shade or dappled light only. Keep it away from direct afternoon sun outdoors.

Q: Does this plant actually clean the air?
A: Chinese Evergreen has been shown to filter formaldehyde and other indoor toxins from the air during normal growing conditions.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
