  •   Aglaonema 'Ruby Garuda', also called Chinese Evergreen, is a tropical foliage plant in the family Araceae, native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia. It belongs to one of the most widely grown groups of indoor plants, with the 'Ruby Garuda' cultivar selected for its deep red and green patterned leaves.

The leaves of 'Ruby Garuda' are broad, oval, and pointed at the tip, with a glossy surface that holds color well indoors. Each leaf carries a deep burgundy-red center that fades outward into green along the edges, with pink-flushed veining running through the blade. It grows in an upright rosette form, with leaves arranged in a layered spread from a central stem.

As an aglaonema, 'Ruby Garuda' can produce small, spathe-type flowers, though it is grown almost entirely for its foliage and blooms are infrequent indoors. It filters formaldehyde and other airborne toxins, and studies on aglaonemas have included them among indoor plants that purify air over time. Rotating it every few weeks keeps growth even on all sides.

You can move it outside during summer months, though it needs cover from rain and should never sit in a spot exposed to direct sun. 'Ruby Garuda' grows well near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking suits it. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it wilts slightly when dry. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to the leaves or sap, as ingestion is harmful and the sap can irritate skin and paws. Keep it on a high shelf or in a spot well out of reach.

  •   Chinese Evergreen 'Ruby Garuda' grows well under bright indirect light and also manages under office fluorescent or LED lighting.

Water it every 10 to 14 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings.

'Ruby Garuda' does best in a well-draining mix of peat or coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of coarse sand.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should be kept away from air conditioning vents and heating units.

'Ruby Garuda' grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied once a month during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and parts of coastal Texas and Arizona. It performs best as an outdoor container or landscape plant in those zones during the warmer months.
  • Q: Can Chinese Evergreen 'Ruby Garuda' survive in a low-light office?
A: It grows under standard fluorescent and LED office lighting without issue, though colors may be less intense than in brighter conditions.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Chinese Evergreen 'Ruby Garuda' wilts slightly when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil before watering.

Q: Is 'Ruby Garuda' safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat the plant. The sap can also irritate paws and skin on contact, so keep it out of their reach.

Q: What happens if this plant gets too much sun?
A: 'Ruby Garuda' scorches in south-facing windows or any spot with strong direct sun. Brown, papery patches appear on the leaf surface.

Q: Does Chinese Evergreen do well near a window with air conditioning nearby?
A: Cold drafts from AC units and heaters cause stress to the leaves. Position it away from vents, and avoid spots where air blows directly onto the foliage.

Q: How often should this plant be repotted?
A: Chinese Evergreen typically needs repotting every two years, or when roots begin circling the bottom of the pot. Move up one pot size at a time using a fresh, well-draining mix.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
