    •   Chick Charmlettes Sleepy Steve (Sempervivum 'Sleepy Steve') is a compact rosette-forming succulent in the Crassulaceae family, native to the mountains of Europe and western Asia where it grows in rocky, well-drained soils. It belongs to the hens and chicks group, a cold hardy succulent known for spreading by offsets and surviving tough alpine conditions.

        'Sleepy Steve' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that press close together in an almost closed, cup-like shape. The leaves are grey-green with soft, web-like filaments stretching across the tips, giving the rosette a frosted, laced appearance. Each rosette stays compact, typically reaching 2 to 3 inches across, and produces small offsets called chicks that cluster around the base.

        In summer, 'Sleepy Steve' sends up a thick stalk bearing star-shaped pink flowers. It blooms once per rosette, after which that rosette dies back, but the surrounding offsets continue to fill in the space. This trait is common across the houseleek family and does not affect the overall spread of the plant.

        Move 'Sleepy Steve' outside for summer and bring it back in before hard frost, or leave it in the garden through autumn since it handles cooler temperatures well. It needs cover from rain when grown in containers, as prolonged wet soil encourages rot. This plant is pet friendly. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it tolerates the dry heated air found in most homes through winter.

It grows outdoors year-round in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. It also performs well outdoors in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky.
