  •   Chick Charmlettes Rowdy Rudy (Sempervivum 'Chick Charmlettes Rowdy Rudy'), also called Hens and Chicks, is a compact rosette-forming succulent in the Crassulaceae family. It originates from the mountain ranges of Europe and western Asia, where it grows in rocky, well-drained terrain and endures harsh winters.

'Rowdy Rudy' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from green to burgundy-red in full sun. The leaf tips are sharply defined, and the leaves deepen in color across the rosette as light exposure increases. It produces small offset rosettes, called chicks, that cluster around the base of the mother plant.

When night temperatures drop in late summer or autumn, it sends up a tall bloom stalk topped with star-shaped flowers in pink to reddish tones. Each rosette blooms once, then dies back, while the surrounding offsets continue growing. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Move it outside for summer, where it handles balcony wind and open exposure without trouble. It can stay outdoors as temperatures begin to fall in autumn; cover it from prolonged heavy rain to prevent waterlogged soil. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Chick Charmlettes Rowdy Rudy grows well in full sun but also grows in bright indirect or low light indoors.

Water it every ten to fourteen days in spring and summer, letting the soil dry out fully between waterings.

'Rowdy Rudy' does best in gritty, fast-draining soil, such as a cactus mix blended with perlite.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F indoors and needs a drop in night temperatures to trigger blooming.

'Rowdy Rudy' is a moderate-growing succulent and needs no regular fertilizer to stay healthy.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, and Washington, along with many surrounding states. It also establishes well in garden beds across the mid-Atlantic, Pacific Northwest, and upper Midwest regions.
  • Q: How much sunlight does Chick Charmlettes Rowdy Rudy need?
A: Full sun brings out the deepest burgundy-red color. In lower light, the foliage stays more green than red, but it grows in bright indirect or low light indoors.

Q: What happens if I overwater?
A: The leaves will soften and turn mushy at the base when soil stays wet too long. Chick Charmlettes Rowdy Rudy needs the soil to dry completely between waterings to prevent root rot.

Q: Can 'Rowdy Rudy' stay outside in autumn?
A: Yes, it can remain outdoors as temperatures drop in autumn, but keep it covered or sheltered from extended heavy rain to protect the soil from becoming waterlogged.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: 'Rowdy Rudy' is non-toxic and pet friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: Do 'Rowdy Rudy' plants bloom indoors?
A: Blooming is triggered by a drop in night temperatures. Plants kept in stable indoor warmth year-round may not flower; moving it outside in cooler months provides the temperature shift needed to bloom.

Q: How do Hens and Chicks propagate and spread?
A: 'Rowdy Rudy' produces small offset rosettes called chicks that form around the base of the mother plant. You can separate these offsets and pot them up individually once they are large enough to handle.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
