  •   Chick Charmlettes Nerdy Nelly (Sempervivum 'Nerdy Nelly') is a compact rosette-forming succulent in the Crassulaceae family, bred as part of the Chick Charmlettes series of dwarf sempervivums. Like all hens and chicks, it originates from the mountainous regions of Europe and Asia, where it grows in rocky, well-drained soils at high elevations.

'Nerdy Nelly' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that flush from green to burgundy-red depending on sun exposure. The leaf tips are often tipped with fine, thread-like extensions, and the overall texture is smooth with a slight waxy finish. Offsets, called chicks, cluster around the base of the mother rosette over time, gradually forming a dense mat.

Sempervivums bloom once per rosette, sending up a tall flower stalk in summer with star-shaped pink to reddish blooms. After flowering, the mother rosette dies back, but the surrounding chicks continue growing and fill in the space. 'Nerdy Nelly' is pet-friendly and safe for cats and dogs.

Rotate the pot periodically so each side receives even light and the rosette stays symmetrical. You can move it outside for the summer, and it handles a balcony position with some wind exposure. Come autumn, it can stay outdoors as temperatures drop, and it tolerates dry heated indoor air during winter. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it needs cover from rain to prevent root rot.

  •   Chick Charmlettes Nerdy Nelly grows well in full sun to partial sun, thriving in at least four to six hours of direct light daily.

Water it every 10-14 days in the growing season, letting the soil dry out completely between waterings.

'Nerdy Nelly' does best in a gritty, fast-draining succulent or cactus mix with added perlite or coarse sand.

It handles temperatures down to around 0°F and tolerates the dry heated air common in winter indoor environments.

'Nerdy Nelly' is a slow to moderate grower; feed it once in spring with a diluted, balanced succulent fertilizer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 3-8, tolerating hard frosts well below 0°F. It grows outdoors year-round in states including Montana, Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, Oregon, Washington, and much of the Northeast and Pacific Northwest. It also grows outdoors in transitional zone states such as Virginia, North Carolina, Kansas, and Missouri.
  • Q: Is Chick Charmlettes Nerdy Nelly safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet-friendly, posing no harm to cats or dogs.

Q: How do I know if I'm overwatering this plant?
A: Chick Charmlettes Nerdy Nelly shows soft, mushy, or translucent leaves at the base when it receives too much water, often paired with a soggy or foul-smelling soil.

Q: Can 'Nerdy Nelly' stay outside in autumn?
A: Yes, it can stay outdoors as temperatures drop in fall and handles frost without damage down to very low temperatures.

Q: How does this plant spread over time?
A: 'Nerdy Nelly' produces small offset rosettes, called chicks, around the base of the mother plant, which can be separated and replanted once they are about a third the size of the parent.

Q: What window works best for 'Nerdy Nelly' indoors?
A: A south- or west-facing window that receives several hours of direct sun each day works well; without enough light, the rosette stretches open and loses its compact shape.

Q: How fast does this succulent grow?
A: 'Nerdy Nelly' is a slow to moderate grower, and a single rosette typically reaches 2-3 inches across at maturity, with offsets appearing gradually through the season.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
