    •   Chick Charmlettes Darlin' Dottie, also called Hens And Chicks, is a compact sempervivum cultivar native to the mountain regions of Europe and western Asia, where it grows in rocky, well-drained soils at high elevations. It belongs to the Crassulaceae family and forms tight, low-growing rosettes that spread by producing small offsets around the mother plant.

        'Darlin' grows in a dense rosette of fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from soft green to pink and burgundy-red depending on sun exposure. The leaf tips are sharp and the edges are edged with fine cilia, giving each rosette a slightly fringed look. It stays compact, typically reaching two to four inches across, with offsets clustering closely around the base.

        When temperatures drop at night, 'Darlin' receives the cue it needs to set flower buds, and star-shaped blooms on upright stems follow in summer. The flowers are typically pink to rose-toned. It is pet friendly, so you can place it freely on floors, shelves, or outdoor spaces shared with cats and dogs.

        You can move 'Darlin' outside for summer, and it handles the transition well through autumn before frost arrives. It tolerates dry, heated indoor air without leaf drop, and you can leave it up to ten days without water. Keep it sheltered from prolonged rain, and tuck it into a rock garden, trough, or container where drainage is fast and full sun reaches the leaves through much of the day.

        'Darlin' is a slow to moderate grower; feed it once in spring with a balanced, diluted fertilizer.

        It is hardy in USDA zones 3 through 8, tolerating frost well below freezing. It grows outdoors year-round in Montana, Minnesota, Colorado, Oregon, Virginia, North Carolina, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut, among others. It also performs well outdoors in Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, New Jersey, Maryland, and Massachusetts.
