    •   Chick Charmlettes Cheeky Charlie (Sempervivum 'Cheeky Charlie') is a compact succulent rosette in the Crassulaceae family, bred from the Sempervivum genus native to the mountains of Europe and Asia Minor. It belongs to the hens and chicks group, a category of clustering rosette succulents long grown in rock gardens and alpine plantings.

        'Cheeky Charlie' forms tight, symmetrical rosettes with fleshy, pointed leaves that shift from green to burgundy-red depending on sun exposure. The leaf tips are slightly pointed, and the surface carries a subtle texture with fine marginal cilia. It stays compact, typically reaching 2 to 4 inches across per rosette, and offsets freely to form a dense mat over time.

        Like other Sempervivum varieties, 'Cheeky Charlie' blooms once per rosette, sending up a tall stalk in summer with star-shaped pink to rose-colored flowers. After flowering, that individual rosette dies back, but the surrounding offsets continue growing to fill the space. It is pet-friendly, and both the leaves and flowers have a long history of edible and medicinal use in traditional European herbalism.

        Move it outside for summer on a balcony or in a garden bed. It handles wind and rain exposure well, though it benefits from cover during prolonged heavy rainfall to prevent root saturation. In autumn it can stay outdoors, and when winter arrives it tolerates frost and freezing temperatures without needing to come inside. You can leave it up to ten days without water, and it handles the dry heated air of an indoor space through winter without issue.

    •   Chick Charmlettes Cheeky Charlie grows best in bright direct sun, ideally placed in a south- or east-facing spot. Rotate the pot every few weeks for even rosette growth. A south-facing window may scorch the leaves in peak summer, so a few inches back from the glass helps.

        Water it every 10 to 14 days during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. It needs water roughly once a month in winter.

        'Cheeky Charlie' grows well in a gritty, free-draining mix, such as a cactus and succulent blend cut with 30 to 50 percent perlite or coarse grit.

        It handles temperatures from about 65°F to 85°F indoors and tolerates freezing temperatures outdoors. It copes with dry heated indoor air through winter without trouble.

        'Cheeky Charlie' is a slow to moderate grower, spreading mainly through offsets rather than vertical height. Feed it with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once in spring and once in early summer.

        It is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8, tolerating temperatures down to around -40°F in the coldest zones. It grows outdoors year-round in states including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Colorado, Utah, Oregon, and Washington. It also grows outdoors in warmer zone 8 states such as North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, and parts of Texas and the Pacific Northwest.
