  •   Cereus repandus 'Petra' Cactus is a rare monstrose form of the columnar apple cactus, distinguished by its irregular, lumpy stem structure. Native to the dry scrublands of Peru and South America, it has been cultivated by collectors for decades as a genuine heirloom specimen in the cactus world. Over time, it develops into a living sculpture with increasingly dramatic proportions.

'Petra' is instantly recognizable for its knobby, warty stem structure, a hallmark of monstrose growth where the normal rib pattern breaks into asymmetrical mounds along the column. The upright, clustering habit means it can develop into a multi-stemmed clump, each column covered in dense areoles and short spines. Its blue-green to grey-green skin gives it an almost stone-like presence that fits equally well in a bohemian living room or minimalist architectural interior.

Mature specimens produce large, white nocturnal blooms during summer months, opening after dark and closing by morning. Encouraging flowers typically requires a night temperature drop and outdoor summer placement, which also gives the plant the intense light it craves. In its native range, the fruit has been consumed locally and the tissues used in traditional practices.

'Petra' works best as a floor display or in a heavy statement pot, since its deep root system needs a substantial container to stay stable as it grows tall. Move it outside for summer to soak up full sun, but always provide cover from rain to prevent rot, and bring it back inside before temperatures drop too far. Keep it well away from small children and pets because the spines and sap can cause irritation. You can leave it up to ten days without water.

  •   Cereus repandus 'Petra' Cactus grows well in bright indirect light, partial sun, or full sun, though south-facing windows can scorch stems in peak summer heat.

Water it deeply every two to three weeks in summer, reducing to once a month or less through winter, always letting soil dry completely between waterings.

'Petra' does best in a fast-draining cactus and perlite mix, roughly 50% grit, to prevent root rot.

It prefers temperatures between 60–90°F and tolerates dry heated indoor air, though it dislikes cold AC or heater drafts.

'Petra' is a moderate grower that benefits from a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer applied once or twice during the active growing season.

It is hardy in USDA zones 9–11, tolerating brief dips to around 25°F but performing best where hard frosts are rare or absent. It grows outdoors year-round in California, Arizona, Texas, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina, Alabama, and Mississippi in the right microclimate. It can succeed outdoors along the Oregon coast and in sheltered pockets of New Mexico with good drainage and protection during the coldest nights.
  • Q: How often should I water Cereus repandus 'Petra' Cactus?
A: Every two to three weeks during the growing season. Cut back to monthly or less in winter, always letting the soil dry completely between waterings.

Q: Is it safe around pets?
A: Cereus repandus 'Petra' Cactus has spines that can cause physical injury, and sap contact may irritate skin or paws, so keep it well out of reach of curious animals.

Q: How do I propagate 'Petra'?
A: Take a stem cutting in spring or summer, let it callous for several days, then plant it in dry cactus mix and wait for roots to establish before watering.

Q: Does the plant need to be rotated?
A: Yes, because 'Petra' leans toward its light source over time; rotating the pot every few weeks encourages even, upright growth.

Q: Can 'Petra' survive while I travel?
A: This cactus handles extended neglect and can easily go ten days or more without water.

Q: What causes yellowing on the stem?
A: Yellowing is almost always caused by overwatering or poor drainage; reduce watering frequency and ensure the pot drains freely to restore healthy green color.

    🌵 For Succulents
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging right away and follow the care instructions included with your order. Succulents prefer to dry out between waterings, so only water when the soil is completely dry.
Succulents are resilient plants and typically recover quickly once they settle into their new environment. Give them a few days to adjust before placing them in direct sunlight, and avoid fertilizing right away.
