  •   Calathea 'Silver Plate', also called Silver Plate Calathea, is a tropical foliage plant in the Marantaceae family, native to the rainforests of South America. It grows naturally beneath a dense canopy, where filtered light and high humidity define its environment.

The leaves of 'Silver Plate' are broad and oval, coated almost entirely in a soft, silvery green with a darker green border running along the outer edge. The undersides are a deep purple-maroon, visible when the leaves shift position through the day. It stays compact, with leaves that arch upward and outward from a central base.

Calatheas in this group produce small, inconspicuous flowers when conditions are right, though 'Silver Plate' is grown primarily for its foliage rather than its blooms. It is a rare houseplant, and finding it outside of specialty collections or dedicated growers takes some searching. This plant is pet friendly, and it also purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other toxins.

Rotating 'Silver Plate' every few weeks keeps growth even on all sides. It thrives near a kitchen where ambient moisture from cooking raises the surrounding humidity. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heating units, both of which push dry air across the leaves. Moving it to a new spot stresses the plant, so once you find a position that works, leave it there.

  •   Calathea 'Silver Plate' grows best in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the leaves.

Water it every seven to ten days, letting the top inch of soil dry slightly between waterings.

'Silver Plate' does best in a well-draining, peat-free mix of coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and struggles when temperatures drop below 60°F.

'Silver Plate' is a slow to moderate grower and benefits from a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11 and 12, where temperatures stay reliably above 50°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii and the southernmost parts of Florida. In all other regions, it performs as an indoor plant and can move outside to a sheltered spot during warm summer months, with cover from rain to protect the leaves.
  • Q: How sensitive is Calathea 'Silver Plate' to being moved around the house?
A: Quite sensitive. It often responds to relocation with drooping or curling leaves, so find a stable spot and keep it there.

Q: How do I know when this plant needs water?
A: Calathea 'Silver Plate' wilts slightly when it has gone too long without water. Check the soil at the same time and water if the top inch feels dry.

Q: Does 'Silver Plate' do well in an office environment?
A: It can grow under full-spectrum or bright LED office lighting, as long as humidity stays above 50 percent and it sits away from air vents.

Q: Is this plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, 'Silver Plate' is non-toxic and pet friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: How does Silver Plate Calathea handle low humidity?
A: It does not handle it well. Leaf edges brown and curl when the air is too dry, so a humidifier nearby or placement near kitchen moisture helps considerably.

Q: Is this plant considered rare?
A: Yes, Silver Plate Calathea is a rare find in the houseplant market and is not commonly stocked in most garden centers.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
