  •   Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion', also called Medallion Prayer Plant, is a tropical foliage plant in the Marantaceae family, native to the rainforests of Brazil. It grows on the shaded forest floor, where filtered light, high humidity, and warm temperatures shape its needs as a houseplant.

The leaves are broad and oval, reaching up to 12 inches long, with a pattern of deep forest green on the outer edges and a pale, silvery-green center that feathers outward in brushstroke-like bands. Underneath, each leaf is a deep magenta-red. The foliage folds upward in the evening and flattens again by morning, a movement pattern typical of prayer plants in the Marantaceae family.

'Medallion' rarely blooms indoors, and when it does, the flowers are small, white to pale purple, and largely hidden beneath the foliage. The more consistent seasonal feature is leaf movement and color depth, which can intensify in response to indirect light conditions.

Rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light from indirect sources. It purifies indoor air and filters formaldehyde and other toxins, and the broad leaves naturally release moisture into the surrounding air. Keep it away from heating vents and air conditioning units, as the dry airflow causes the leaf edges to brown and curl. It thrives in a bathroom, near a kitchen sink, inside a glass terrarium, or in any spot where ambient humidity stays consistently above 50 percent. This plant is pet friendly.

  •   Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' - 6" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY grows best in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows.

Water it every 7-10 days, keeping the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged.

'Medallion' does best in a well-draining, peat-based mix with added perlite for moisture control.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F, away from cold drafts or sudden temperature changes.

'Medallion' is a slow to moderate grower; feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11-12, where frost does not occur and temperatures stay above 50°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii and southern Florida. It performs well as a patio plant in summer across California, Texas, and other warm-season states, moved back indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 60°F.
  • Q: Does Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' - 6" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY grow well under artificial office lighting?
A: Yes, it does well under standard fluorescent or LED office lights, as long as the light runs for at least 12 hours a day.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' - 6" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY wilts slightly and the soil feels dry about an inch down when it needs water. Overwatering shows up as yellowing leaves and soggy stems at the base.

Q: Can 'Medallion' go in a terrarium?
A: Yes, a closed or open terrarium with good airflow works well, as the enclosed space holds the high humidity it needs naturally.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: 'Medallion' yellows most often from overwatering, low humidity, or exposure to fluoride in tap water. Try switching to filtered or distilled water if the soil moisture and humidity levels seem fine.

Q: Is Medallion Prayer Plant safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA.

Q: How do I propagate this plant?
A: Medallion Prayer Plant is propagated by division at repotting time. Gently separate a section with its own roots and pot it into fresh, moist soil.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
