  •   Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion', also called Medallion Prayer Plant, is a tropical foliage plant in the Marantaceae family, native to the rainforests of Brazil. It grows on the forest floor beneath dense canopy, where humidity is high and light filters through layers of leaves.

The leaves are large, broadly oval, and held upright on long petioles. Each leaf surface is painted with a pattern of dark green outer zones, pale green feathered banding toward the center, and a soft pink-to-cream midrib. The undersides are a deep burgundy-red. Leaves can reach 8 to 12 inches across on a mature plant.

'Medallion' is grown primarily for its foliage rather than its blooms, which are small, inconspicuous, and rarely appear in indoor conditions. It does fold its leaves upward in the evening and open them again in the morning, a movement common to plants in the Marantaceae family. This plant is pet friendly and purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other toxins.

Keep it away from south-facing windows, as direct sun scorches the leaves. 'Medallion' thrives near a kitchen, where ambient moisture from cooking and washing supports the high humidity it needs. It is sensitive to being moved frequently, so choose a spot and leave it there. Rotate the pot a quarter turn every two weeks for even growth on all sides, and keep it away from heating vents and air conditioning units.

  •   Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' - 4" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY grows best in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure.

Water it every 7 to 10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings.

'Medallion' does best in a well-draining, peat-free mix with added perlite and orchid bark.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and drops below 60°F can damage the foliage.

'Medallion' grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11 and 12, where frost is not a concern. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii and southern Florida, where temperatures stay above 60°F. It can move outside in summer in warmer regions such as California, Texas, Georgia, and South Carolina, but comes back indoors before temperatures fall in autumn.
  • Q: How much humidity does Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' - 4" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY need to stay healthy?
A: It needs humidity above 50%, and prefers 60% or higher. A humidifier placed nearby or a pebble tray with water works well.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Calathea Roseopicta 'Medallion' - 4" Pot - NURSERY POT ONLY wilts slightly when the soil has gone too dry. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering.

Q: Is 'Medallion' safe to keep around cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs. This plant is pet friendly.

Q: Why are the leaf edges on mine turning brown?
A: Brown edges on 'Medallion' are usually caused by low humidity, fluoride in tap water, or air from a nearby vent. Try switching to filtered or rainwater and move it away from any draft sources.

Q: Can Medallion Prayer Plant grow in an office without natural windows?
A: It can get by under LED grow lights or bright office fluorescents, though growth will be slower. Keep the light source consistent and positioned close enough to provide steady, indirect-strength output.

Q: Is Medallion Prayer Plant a good choice for someone who hasn't owned houseplants before?
A: Medallion Prayer Plant needs consistent humidity and dislikes being moved or exposed to dry air, so it takes more attention than a typical starter plant. Water quality, humidity, and a stable location matter more than frequent watering.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
