  •   Begonia White Ice (Begonia x hybrida) is a cane-type begonia bred for its heavily spotted foliage, belonging to the Begoniaceae family and developed from hybrid lines with roots in tropical Central and South America. It sits among a group of cane begonias sometimes called polka dot begonias for their signature silver-spotted leaves.

The leaves are large, asymmetrical, and angel-wing shaped, deep green with dense silver-white spots scattered across the surface. The undersides carry a red-tinged blush, and the stems are upright and cane-like, giving the plant a structured, tiered form as it grows. The silver spotted leaves are the clearest way to identify it among other cane begonias.

'White Ice' produces clusters of small white to pale pink flowers on arching stems above the foliage, typically blooming in spring and summer. The blooms are lightly fragrant and appear in pendulous bunches. It benefits from rotating a quarter turn each week so all sides receive even light, which also keeps the flowering stems from leaning toward the window.

Keep 'White Ice' away from south-facing windows, where the leaves scorch. It thrives near a kitchen where ambient moisture from cooking and dishwashing raises the humidity around it. Move it outside for summer in a sheltered spot, but cover it from rain and bring it back in before temperatures drop. The plant is sensitive to being moved frequently, so choose a location and leave it there as long as possible. Cats, dogs, and small children should not have access to it, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation and the plant is harmful if nibbled or touched by sensitive individuals. Keep it on a high shelf out of reach, and note that it produces pollen that may affect allergy-prone households.

  •   Begonia White Ice grows well in bright indirect light, away from direct sun exposure.

It needs watering when the top inch of soil feels dry, roughly every 7 to 10 days.

'White Ice' does best in a well-draining, peat-free mix with added perlite for aeration.

It prefers temperatures between 60°F and 75°F and is sensitive to cold drafts from AC vents or heaters.

'White Ice' grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer applied monthly during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 11, tolerating outdoor conditions down to around 35°F before cold causes damage. It grows outdoors year-round in Hawaii, southern Florida, and frost-free parts of southern California and the Gulf Coast. It can summer outdoors in zones 4 through 9, including states like Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, Oregon, and New York, as long as it is brought inside before temperatures fall in autumn.
  • Q: How much humidity does Begonia White Ice need indoors?
A: It prefers humidity above 50%. Placing it near a kitchen or bathroom gives it a natural humidity boost without a humidifier.

Q: How do I know when to water it?
A: Watch for slight wilting or leaves that look less firm than usual. Begonia White Ice also shows dryness when the top inch of soil pulls away slightly from the pot edges.

Q: Can 'White Ice' grow under office LED lights?
A: It can manage under full-spectrum LED grow lights placed 6 to 12 inches above the canopy, though growth will be slower than near a bright window.

Q: Is this plant safe around cats and dogs?
A: 'White Ice' should be kept well out of reach of pets. The sap causes skin and paw irritation, and cats and dogs should not be left to nibble or eat it.

Q: How do I encourage even growth on 'White Ice'?
A: Give the pot a quarter turn every week or two. Without rotating, the canes lean toward the light source and the plant becomes uneven over time.

Q: Can this plant go outside in summer?
A: 'White Ice' can move outside once nighttime temperatures stay above 55°F. Place it in a sheltered spot with bright shade and cover it from heavy rain, which can bruise the foliage.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
