  •   Begonia 'Rex', also called Rex Begonia, is a foliage houseplant grown for its wildly colorful, variegated leaves rather than flowers. Native to tropical forests of India and Southeast Asia, this begonia offers visual drama on even the smallest desk or tabletop.

The leaves are the star here, featuring shades of burgundy-red, silver, gray, pink, and deep green in patterns that vary widely between individual plants. Heart-shaped and heavily veined, the foliage emerges from a compact, upright clumping base that stays relatively short and manageable. Leaf texture ranges from smooth to slightly fuzzy depending on the variety, and the undersides often display burgundy or red tones that echo the upper surface.

While 'Rex' produces small flowers, the foliage itself is the main attraction and remains colorful year-round indoors.

Rotate 'Rex' regularly to maintain even, balanced growth on all sides. Move it outside in summer where it grows well in sheltered, humid spots near kitchen moisture and sinks. The plant is sensitive to direct air from heating and cooling units, so place it away from AC vents and heaters. 'Rex' is also sensitive to being moved frequently, so choose its location with care and keep it there. Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat the plant, as it causes mild sap irritation to skin and paws; keep it on a high shelf out of reach of pets and best placed away from small children. It does well in terrariums where humidity remains consistently high.

  •   Begonia 'Rex' grows well in medium to bright indirect light but scorches in direct south-facing windows.

Water it every 10-14 days during the growing season, allowing the soil surface to dry between waterings.

'Rex' does best in light, well-draining potting mix amended with perlite or orchid bark to prevent moisture retention.

It prefers temperatures between 65-75°F and is sensitive to sudden shifts, especially cold drafts from AC and heater air.

'Rex' is a slow to moderate grower that benefits from balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength every 4-6 weeks during spring and summer only.

It is hardy in USDA zones 11-12. It grows outdoors in Hawaii, southern Florida, and southern California. In all other regions, grow it as a year-round indoor plant.
  • Q: How often should I water Begonia 'Rex'?
A: Watch for wilting as the first sign of dry soil, then water thoroughly. Overwatering causes root rot far more quickly than underwatering does.

Q: Why are the leaves losing color and becoming pale?
A: Begonia 'Rex'  needs bright indirect light to maintain its red, burgundy, and silver tones. Too little light causes the foliage to fade and lose intensity.

    Q: Can 'Rex' be propagated?
A: Yes, propagate it easily from leaf cuttings placed in moist perlite or sphagnum moss under humidity cover, or divide the rhizomatous roots during repotting.

Q: How should I position this plant in my home?
A: 'Rex' grows well on a bright tabletop or desk away from direct afternoon sun and at least 3-4 feet from south or west windows to prevent leaf scorch.

Q: Is Rex Begonia safe for cats and dogs?
A: The sap causes mild skin and paw irritation, so keep it out of reach of pets and away from areas where they might chew or brush against the leaves.

Q: Why is my plant so sensitive to being moved?
A: Rex Begonia drops leaves temporarily when relocated because the rhizomatous root system and foliage are slow to adjust to new light and humidity conditions. Once settled, it stabilizes within 2-3 weeks.

  • Provide porous soil with adequate drainage, pots with drainage hole are recommended. Bright, filtered light and ample airflow. Water thoroughly when soil is dry to the touch. Never let your succulents sit in water. Do NOT water on the leaves. If you water from beneath by letting the plant sit in a saucer of water, make sure to pour off any excess water after a few minutes. The hotter it is outside, the faster your soil will dry out, so you’ll need to water more often if you live in a hot area. Water with caution in winter, as the plant can lose its roots if the soil stays cold and wet for extended periods; protect from frost to prevent scarring.
