  •   Dypsis lutescens, also called Areca Palm, is a tropical palm native to Madagascar, where it grows in humid lowland forests. It belongs to the family Arecaceae and has become one of the most widely grown indoor palms around the world.

The canes emerge from the base in dense clusters, each one arching upward and outward with pairs of forest green, feathery leaflets running along either side. Mature fronds can reach several feet in length, and the overall spread of the plant can be quite wide. The canes have a yellow-gold tone that contrasts with the deep green of the foliage.

Indoors, Dypsis lutescens occasionally produces small yellow flower clusters near the base of the fronds, though flowering is uncommon in typical home conditions. It is confirmed pet-friendly and non-toxic to cats and dogs. It also purifies indoor air by filtering formaldehyde and other toxins, and the transpiration from its many leaves naturally adds moisture to the surrounding air.

Rotate it every few weeks so all sides receive even light exposure. Dypsis lutescens does well on a floor or in a large basket, given the width it can reach at maturity. Keep it away from air conditioning vents and heaters, both of which dry out the air around it. You can move it outside for the summer months, but place it where it has cover from rain, which can compact the soil or cause overwatering issues.

  •   Areca Palm grows best in bright indirect light, away from south-facing windows where direct sun scorches the fronds.

Water it every 7-10 days during the growing season, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings; it wilts slightly when dry.

Dypsis lutescens does best in a well-draining mix of peat, perlite, and coarse sand that holds some moisture without staying soggy.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 85°F and should be kept away from cold drafts or vents below 55°F.

Dypsis lutescens is a moderate-to-fast grower indoors; feed it with a balanced liquid fertilizer every four weeks during spring and summer.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10-11, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 30°F. It grows outdoors year-round in Florida, Hawaii, southern California, and parts of Texas and Arizona. It can also spend summers outside in cooler zones, brought back indoors before nighttime temperatures drop below 55°F.
  • Q: Is Areca Palm safe for cats and dogs?
A: Yes, it is non-toxic and pet-friendly for both cats and dogs.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Areca Palm wilts slightly when the soil has dried out too long; the fronds may droop or curl at the tips before recovering after watering.

Q: Why are the leaves on Dypsis lutescens turning yellow?
A: Yellow fronds are most often caused by overwatering, low humidity, or exposure to dry air from a heater or AC vent.

Q: Can I propagate this plant at home?
A: Dypsis lutescens is propagated by separating offshoots from the base of the mother plant; each division needs its own roots intact before potting separately.

Q: Does Areca Palm need high humidity indoors?
A: It does best with humidity above 50%. Placing it near a kitchen or bathroom helps, and a pebble tray with water under the pot can supplement moisture in dry rooms.

Q: How large does this plant get indoors?
A: Areca Palm can reach 6-8 feet tall indoors over several years, and the clumping spread often grows as wide as it does tall, so floor placement works better than a shelf.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
*** We pack carefully to protect each plant during transit, so larger orders may arrive in multiple packages.
