  •   Anthurium 'Purple', also called Flamingo Flower, is a tropical flowering houseplant from the Araceae family, native to the rainforests of Central and South America. It grows naturally beneath a dense forest canopy, where humidity is high and light filters through layers of foliage.

The glossy heart-shaped leaves are deep forest green and grow on upright stems that give the plant a clean, structured form. Spathes emerge in shades of deep purple to violet, waxy to the touch, with a cream or pale yellow spadix rising from the center. The foliage and blooms together create a look that works in both minimalist interiors and more bohemian, layered spaces.

'Purple' produces long-lasting blooms that can persist for several weeks at a time, cycling through the year when conditions are right. The spathe shifts in tone as it matures, moving from vivid purple toward deeper, cooler shades. There is no significant fragrance. This anthurium hybrid is also known to purify indoor air, filtering formaldehyde and other airborne toxins while naturally humidifying the air around it.

Move it outside in summer to a covered spot, away from direct rainfall, where shelter keeps the leaves and spathe from bruising. 'Purple' is sensitive to being moved between locations and may drop leaves or delay blooming after a position change, so pick a spot and let it settle. It produces pollen and can trigger reactions in allergy-sensitive households. Keep it on a high shelf or out of reach, as the sap causes skin and paw irritation, cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it, and it is best placed away from small children.

  •   Anthurium 'Purple' grows well in bright indirect light, positioned near an east or north-facing window. It scorches in south-facing windows and needs rotating every few weeks for even growth.

Water it every 7 to 10 days, allowing the top inch of soil to dry between waterings. It wilts slightly when dry, and sitting in waterlogged soil leads to root rot.

'Purple' does best in a chunky, well-draining mix of orchid bark, perlite, and peat or coco coir. It needs good aeration at the roots and will decline in heavy, moisture-retaining potting soil.

It prefers temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and should not drop below 55°F. It is sensitive to cold drafts from air conditioning units and heat from radiators or forced-air vents.

'Purple' grows at a moderate pace and benefits from a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength, applied monthly during spring and summer. Feeding stops in fall and winter when growth naturally slows.

It is hardy in USDA zones 10 to 12, where frost is rare and temperatures stay above 55°F year-round. It grows outdoors in Hawaii, southern Florida, and parts of southern California. It also suits sheltered coastal areas of Texas and Arizona in the warmest microclimates of those zones.
  • Q: How much humidity does Anthurium 'Purple' need?
A: It needs high humidity, ideally above 60%. Placing it near a kitchen or bathroom helps, or group it with other plants to raise moisture levels around the leaves.

Q: How do I know when it needs water?
A: Anthurium 'Purple' wilts slightly and the leaves lose a little tension when the soil has been dry too long. Check the top inch of soil with your finger before watering rather than going by a fixed calendar schedule.

Q: Is 'Purple' safe around pets?
A: Cats and dogs shouldn't be left to nibble or eat it, as the sap causes irritation to skin and paws on contact. Keep it on a high shelf well out of their reach.

Q: Why are the leaves on my plant turning yellow?
A: 'Purple' most often yellows from overwatering, low humidity, or cold air from a nearby vent. Check the roots for rot, move it away from drafts, and make sure the pot has drainage.

Q: Can Flamingo Flower be propagated at home?
A: Yes. Take a stem cutting with at least one node and one leaf, let the cut end dry for an hour, then place it in moist sphagnum moss or a perlite and water mix. Roots typically develop within four to six weeks in warm, humid conditions.

Q: How long do the blooms last?
A: Flamingo Flower produces waxy spathes that hold for six to eight weeks or longer under good conditions. A slight drop in nighttime temperature, around 60°F to 65°F, can encourage a new bloom cycle to begin.

    🌿 For Houseplants
When your package arrives, you may notice a bit of loose soil in the box. This is completely normal during shipping.
Please remove your plants from their packaging as soon as possible and review the care instructions included with your order. Water based on your plant’s needs, making sure not to overwater.
Houseplants may need a short adjustment period after arrival. Give your plant time to acclimate to its new space before placing it with other plants. You can gently clean the leaves if needed, and wait to fertilize until it has settled in. Always check soil moisture instead of watering on a fixed schedule.
